Muncie 21 andM22 tranny questions...Help!!

I currently have a M21 tranny in my car and always wanted to put in the M22. I was told however that I will only get about 5000 miles or so on the tranny because of the straight cut gears. I know that they put these things in the cars in the early 70's and late 60's. I would think that you would get more mileage out of them. anybody been using an M22 without any problems?

Also is anybody that is using an M21 or M22 get a little grinding from 2nd to 3rd. (syncros not lining up). I was also told that that is a hard shift on the tranny because of load.

Helical gears, used in most trannys, are quieter than straight gears, but that is their only advantage. Because their teeth are angled, helical gears push each other, one forward, the other backward. This causes much greater side loads than straight gears. The gears on the M22 are also wider for added strength.

Grinding is not normal for either of these trannnys. Either the synchros are worn, gears are worn, or clutch isn't properly adjusted.

I used to have a 442 with an M21 and a 4.88 12 bolt. With the original Hurst shifter in it, I could hang excellent power shifts without a hint of gear gnashing.

The M22 was nicked the Rock Crucher, these trans were built to take abuse. 5,000 miles on a M22, only if it was done 1/4 mile at a time.

The m22 should last quite some time as long as it isn't abused too bad. They are quite a bit more expensive than an m-20 or m-21.
