Upon start up my car emits a smog of white smoke and then it goes away, but today I noticed on two ocasions when i was on the highway shifting from 2nd to 3rd while gunning it that a large amount of white smoke was emited. I have long tube headers no cats, magnaflow 3in exauhst and I have new piston rings, the block has been decked and a 3 angle valve job completed, with ported and polished heads, with less than 400 miles on them and I was wandering if I have a major problem. It has only done this twice, and on cold startups. so hope this is enough info for ya'll thanks
Kraest 04-08-2008, 01:02 PM White smoke is a head gasket leak... you're combusting coolant...
Who were the heads ported by? They might not be completely flat. Were they decked?
Blueish smoke is oil. That can be improper break-in on new rings, incorrectly installed rings, bad rings, etc.
Take your radiator cap off as soon as you start the car and see if the coolant is bubbling up before the thermostat opens. Give it a few revs by hand and watch closely. If that's the case, it's a head gasket problem. Check your oil. If it looks like a milkshake, that's another telltale sign. Get it replaced unless you feel like spending your money on bearings and pistons.

Which doesn't make any sense because on the LS1, the pistons slightly come out of the hole from the factory ;)

Well my smoke is white but we have decided its actually oil burning (CRAP)
the heads were only ported and polished, so It's either the rings with less than 400 miles on them, valve seals, or PCV system. But today we reved it and smoke did come out from the rev. Other times it doesnt. OMG this car needs some consistancy in order figure whats wrong. But a LT1 guy says its oil burning even though it was white smoke now turning blue and my coolant stays toped off never dropping. So who ever did the ring job probably screwed up. Would a compressiong test tell me for sure?
also the oil was not milky just had engine flush in it from the flush before i bought it. coolant looked a little grimmy though

Altekameraden 04-08-2008, 10:37 PM If it is the rings how much would a ring job be for an LS1 in teh virginia beach area. I was thinking of just saving and buying a new shortblock instead. what do ya'll think

Altekameraden 04-10-2008, 03:42 PM Finally got to pull off the MAF and air intake, I looked past the throttle body and noticed a thick layer of oil, and it was also forward of the throttle blade, I was wandering if this would cause a large amount of smoke consistantly and at WOT. Plus today I was parked on an incline with my rear much lower than the front, after I started it and began to drive on the highway my smoke was worse than it had ever been. YUCK, so it is the PCV system from the looks. And I am clueless as to what hose is what and where the catch can goes (hehe) so some help would be useful. I hope its only the PCV but the intake is pretty nasty in there.
Kraest 04-10-2008, 05:58 PM You should have the LS6 type PCV system in there since you have an LS6 intake manifold from the factory, although I'm not sure about the valley tray. I doubt it's the PCV system, but check the valve by the thottle body.

Waiting for my catch can to come in, but 2 quarts in 4 days is rediculous I wouldnt think that would be the problem I look like a fog machine going down the road if I had the car parked on an incline for more than 10 mins. i can't really tell if its just when I accelerate so valve seals are an option as well right.

I'd suspect an internal engine problem like said before.

I said it once I'll say it again. Change the PCV valve. When mine stuck open it used enough oil to turn on the check oil light in one day. Fine on Friday 2 quarts low on Saturday.
Even with a catch can you need a good PCV valve. Shoot it's a 5 minute 5 dollar repair so if it doesn't fix it then come back and post up.
