Some Dumbass Questions about speakers

My brother was giving a set of Boston Acoustics speaker away and I told him I'd take them even though I knew one speaker was blown.

The part thats blown is the big speaker. It measures 8.25" from the outside metal edge and about 6" from the soft cone part. Is it an 8" or a 6"? It's round. Can I get some speaker from a car stereo place and put it in there? As long as it sounds OK it's fine with me. Best Buy? EBAY? Ultimate electronics. Some schmo with a garage full of stereo carp?

Should I just throw these in the trash?

get out your phone book/yellow pages and look to see if anyone in your area offers speaker re coning. if the price is right go for it. independent stereo shops would be your best bet for this service, best buy/ circuit city/ future shop probably won't offer this or even mention this option... no commission for sales staff. those BA are probably worth the cost. good luck

It's probably a 6.5" speaker, but I concur -- pics and model number to be sure.

It sounds to me like we're talking about a pair of shelf speaker with several drivers in each. You really can't mix car audio and home audio -- car speakers are usually 4 ohms, whereas home speakers are usually 8 ohms.

I could go into details if you want, but if this is indeed the case, you're not going to be satisfied with the results.

We need more details... it sounds like a pair of seperates (component speakers).

Boston Acoustics makes some nice, sometimes fairly high end car audio... But I doubt someone is going to cost effectively repair it. If it is a set of components, you could buy a brand new pair for $190 or so depending on what model it is.

EDIT: Ahhh, I see it is one of their home audio speakers. I assumed it wasn't because you were talking about putting it in your car.

I did some research -- Boston Accoustics calls the big speaker on the A-70 an 8". It is 8 ohms.

Like frankh said, see if anyone in your area fixes these things. It shouldn't cost much.

Otherwise, see if you can find another speaker that is the same size and same impeadance (that's the ohms). For best results, look for a replacement woofer for a Boston Accoustics A-70, but if you don't really care about sound quality, any similar speaker will do the trick.

Well most people know that car audio stuff (usually 4 ohm) doesn't mix well with home audio... so I was giving credit.

I don't think anywhere even remotely close to "most" people know that.

Maybe one in ten. A little better on this board, just because most of us are at least somewhat technically adept.
