Oil Pressure Gauge

Quick question - and let me preface it by saying I've only owned this car for a month. Its 2001 Z28 M6. 54,000 miles

When the car is off, and I turn the ignition to "on" (but don't actually start it) the gauage goes to 0. When I turn the ignition "off" the gauge will show a positive reading (anywhere between 5 and 40).

Is this normal?

When I drive the vehicle, it idles and sits between 40-45, and at WOT will get up to 60, so I don't think there are any oil pump issues. I'm just wondering if the gauges read differently if the ignition is on or off. Thanks!

This is normal, My 2000 silverado does the same thing. The gage is electronic and reads to the last second as the oil pressure is falling, then stops when the signal is lost. Then the key is turned on and the signal is 0, then as the engine starts and oil pressure rises so does the oil gage.

Thanks for answering my question. This is my first GM product, and I'm just starting to learn it "quirks." I just couldn't understand why the pressure would read 40 with the car off lol.
