6 speed difference

Is the 6 speed better then a auto and a 5 speed? And why and what is the big difference. I'm not stupid I know the what is a manual trans and auto trans, just want to know the performance difference and such.

Main difference is who does the shifting.
Auto = computer
6-speed = you

Many consider 6-speeds to be more fun to drive on the streets, but they are also more difficult to launch at the track. As far as performance - the transmission does not change the power the motor has, BUT a 6-speed will always have higher RWHP dyno numbers than an auto, because it is a more efficient transmission and doesnt have a torque convertor to suck up power.

But, even though auto's will dyno lower - many say that their superior launches and better consistency make up for that...

basically the manual trans just has extra gears for better crusing. as with an old school 4 speed ( munice m21, m22 etc), 4th gear is a 1:1 ratio. with our trannies (t56), 5th and 6th gear are overdrive gears. our sixth gear is .5:1 as opposed to an old trany which only has a 1:1 ratio. so instead of turning like 3000 driving on the highway, we would be more in the range of 1500-1600. hope that clears it up for you a little

In terms of toughness and handling abuse, the T56 is better stock for stock vs the 4L60, by far.

What are you takin about. We're talkin about the differnce about 6 peed, 5 speed and auto, in the camaro. And the pros and cons. You have any your own two cents, chip in.

in the 4th generation camaro you wont see a 5 speed unless u have a 6 cylinder so forget that

as for the 6 speed and the gear ratio's

4th gear is 1:1 which means for every one rotation of the engine the tranmission tranmits one rotation to the driveshaft
it also means for every one foot lb of torque sent to the tranny sends one foot lb of torque out

5th gear is .74:1 which means for every one rotation of the engine, blah blah blah, 1.33 rotations of the drive shaft, and for every one foot lb of torque sent, .74 foot lbs come out

6th gear is .5:1 which is easier to understand, every one rotation of the engine blah blah blah 2 rotations of the drive shaft and every one foot lb of torque sent to the tranny, .5 ft lb comes out

torque is rotational force, it is what essentially moves your car
when your car is at a complete stop it is harder to push than if it was rolling
this is why we need a 2.66 1st gear, that huge multiplication of torque makes it easier to start moving the car

I think what you're also trying to find out here is "why" the 6-speed (T56) is (considered) "better" than the A4 (4L60E) or M5 (T5).

That is because it is built TOUGH :yes:. The factory torque rating on the T56 is ~450 lb-ft of torque, vs. the 4L60E's rating of about ~350 lb-ft, and the T5 probably has a rating around ~300 or less? :shrug: Even the upgraded 4L65E (which came out in the C6 'Vette) only had its torque rating raised to approx. ~385 lb-ft :rolleyes:.

Also, consider this ..... the T56 is the same transmission used in all C5's, C6's, and Z06's, as well as Mustang Cobras, Ford GT, and the Viper! ;) There are even heavier duty variations available (ie: Viper) but in "stock" (F-body) form, they're still very strong. Again, rated to ~450 lb-ft!! :thumb:

benefits of a 6 speed. All around more fun, better gas mileage, less components related to the tranny, so its less maintainance than an a4

The problems with the manuals, is more room for error when racing, suck in stop, and go traffic. A lot harder on othe components, like rear end, and engine if you over rev. Also the auto can be made much faster than a manual w/ the addition of a stall converter:D
