im looking into buying an 94 lt1 for a swap. the owner says that the motor was originally set up for a t56 tranny. he says that its the only trans that will bolt up correctly. from what ive heard, most the chevy motors have interchangeable trannys. so my question is what trannys will bolt up to this motor. if the t56 is the only one, then is there adaptor plates to make other transmissions possible such as a t5?

my question is why would u not want a t-56. its a much better tranny than a t-5.

well auctually, im putting this motor in a volvo wagon i have and am trying to do it on the cheap. the t56's arent exactly cheap compared to the t5, and are harder to find at a j/y or local. plus the fact that the stock rear end and/or axles would be the weak point until that is upgraded.

anbody else on whether a t5 will work?

any trans that will bolt to a regular small block chevy will work

you will need the proper flywheel for the 1 piece rear main seal, for the trans(T56 uses a wierd flywheel) and for the diameter clutch you use

as long as you have a chevy bell housing
you do know that a t-5 is rated for less than what an LT1 makes stock as far as TQ. there are alot of t56 for sale in the used parts sections or just use an auto

I have broken several t-5 they are turds...that was behind a 300h.p. 305

that is one thing the owner said too was that he wasnt sure what flywheel and clutch would work for this motor and a t5. he said the t56 has a different bolt hole spacing on the flywheel. is this true? will i be able to use a t5 flywheel and clutch, or t56 parts or a mixture of both?

also, what is this motor rated crank horse? it came out of a firebird

as long as the T-5 came from a 87 or newer small block, the T5 flywheel will be fine

the LT1 will be 265-285, depending on year

The T5 will not have the T56's 17 pulse per mile VSS let the LT1 computer know your speed and if you have an electric speedo, it might not work correctly.

The LT1 computer is looking for a electro-magnetic driven VSS, not electric gear-driven VSS or mechanical VSS like the T5 might have.

I remember there being something that can be attached to the driveshaft that had 40 teeth, magnetic pickup, and does work as a substitute for a 40 pulse VSS. Then just reprogram the VSS for 40, the 4L60E uses 40 by the way.

With that 40 teeth thing, you could have that as a VSS for the LT1 computer, and the stock T5 VSS for your speedo(if mech speedo).

Then again, I'm not completely positive if the LT1 computer NEEDS an accurate VSS signal.

I tuned it out, seems to run fine
