Think I have to much timing?

I have a cc503/xe224/230 cam. I scanned it at work today and notice the timing was 27 degrees at idle. I have LT1 edit so changing it should not be a problem. I was just wondering what the timing should be for a base line. I think this may be to much timing. I think I getting cam surge from like 3000 rpm's and up. Any help would be great.

I'm running 27-29 degrees at idle. I was told you need this much advance to idle decently. I have a simular cam ( Crane #109831) but i have 396 cubes.
