Just Finished Spec 3 Install

First off the pedal feel on this clutch is great. I can't believe how good it feels. Now, I have some questions.

I know they said it would chatter for a while until it gets broke in, but the whole car shakes and vibrates before it engages. Sometimes I can get it to go smooth, other times it vibrates like a mo fo. Is this normal??

Also, when I bled the clutch, I had a friend take off the resevoir cap and watch the fluid while I compressed the slave cylinder from underneath. I did this until there were no bubbles and then connected the slave and topped off the resevoir. The clutch engages at almost he top of the pedal travel, I barely have to push on the pedal and it engages. Also, if I lightly, and I mean lightly hold my foot on the pedal I can feel some vibration. Is this normal???

Sorry for all the Noob questions but this is the first clutch I have ever done on a F bod.

Anyone??? This is really bothering me. Now whenever I start to let off the pedal and if there is a load on the car I can hear a whinning/grinding noise.

Hey I have the same clutch and unfornutaly its done after 500miles. Now its slipping at WOT. So I ordered Spec Stage 3+ . I made a big search and it looks a great clutch, and the most expensive too. After this one I will definitely go with Mcleod ST.

BTW I have the same problems. (Shaking/bucking) But these are also because of my camshaft.

I had a lightweight Spec Stage 3 w/Fidanza alum flywheel in my last Z. It would chatter a bit if I tried to slip the clutch too much or try to get moving from a stop w/RPM lower than 1300 or so.

Re: Just Finished Spec 3 Install

I installed a spec stage 2 with a fidanza aluminum flywheel around the first of the year. At first the chatter was almost unbarable (partly due to the aluminum flywheel), now the set up has about 5,000 miles on it and i smoothly engage the clutch. The spec clutchs take some time to get used to, but i feel they are a descent clutch. try getting rpms to around 1500, and let out the clutch pedal rather quickly when you feel it start to engage. If possible, avoid tight parking lots and gas stations, those are the only places i still experience chatter due to slipping the clutch too much.

Re: Just Finished Spec 3 Install

Yeah, after driving it tonight I have gotten used to it pretty good. Every now and then at a stoplight I might get some chatter and jerking but not much.

Pulling the car in and out of my garage is a different story alltogether.

Re: Just Finished Spec 3 Install

I broke mine in with stop and go driving for a couple of hundred miles. Took a couple of weeks. I guess I am one of the lucky ones I have no noises or vibrations. Now it will buck if you try to let the clutch out like the stocker. I have found that you have to give more gas and let out the clutch slower than before. Once you get used to it it is smooth. Reverse is the same way. You just have to take your time and get used to the way it engages. It is by far the best clutch I have ever owned. I went with the Spec steel flywheel along with my stage three. Can't wait for Spec to meet NX at the strip.

Yeah I have noticed that you have to let out of it a lot slower with more throttle. I am driving it everywhere I go to get it broke in so I can spray it. I already have a few races lined up and can't wait until its done.

Should I spray it right away or break it in a few hundred miles more??

Re: Just Finished Spec 3 Install

Spec recommends 500 miles for their clutch. BTW my Spec 3+ and the friction plate came today. Should I do anything with flywheel? Or just bolt the friction plate and clutch on ?

Re: Just Finished Spec 3 Install

Have your flywheel turned. Never install a new clutch with an old flywheel. The clutch needs a "new" surface to bond with the flywheel.

Re: Just Finished Spec 3 Install

I think I should be more clear. My Spec ALum. Flywheel and Spec 3 clutch came with the new engine a few months ago. I did 500miles and the clutch is slipping now. (due to 1 hour stop/go traffic), so I just got my new Spec3+ clutch (best spec clutch ever) and friction plate. I will use my same Spec Alum. Flywheel for sure.

is it clear now? Why should I resurface the FLywheel?

thats the way the clutch is. Youll find that the faster you let the clutch out, the better it behaves. I often chirp the tires taking off because thats better than dealing with chattering. The SPEC 3 needs pressure put on it. it doesnt like slipping under small ammounts of pressure. It is DESIGNED for handling large ammounts of torque, and most driving around isnt a high-torque scernario. by the way... mine didnt break in fully until 2500 miles. at that point i got frustrated with it so I intentionally flogged it and got it hot. it was 50% better the next day That being said, its still not an easy clutch to please.

To be completely assured the flywheel surface is 100% true. Yeah it may not be fully and completely necessary after that low of mileage but its better than the money spent on the disc going straight down the tubes.

My Stage 2 was perfect after about 300 miles...drives like stock with better pedal feel. No chattering, no slipping and excellent engagement.

But I also got the new friction plate. So its like a new flywheel for the clutch disk. You got me?
