new JD Power dependability study

as expected, lexus is at the top ... followed by ... mercury??!!
and WTF is olds still doing on these lists?
here is a somewhat funny but also interesting point brought up by someone on fark:
This is for real, and here's why: Lexus is obvious. Mercury, Buick, and Cadillac are old people boat cars. You see them all the time in the left lane of a freeway going 25 mph with their left turn signal on for 5 miles.
Old people's cars last forever. They never drive fast. They never corner fast. They NEVER accelerate fast, and accelerating fast is hard on an engine and trans. And old people are religious about maintenance, they have those things in for oil changes way before 3000 miles.
That's probably why they're showing up in the list. I'm not saying young people don't drive buicks, but they drive used buicks. You ever hear of a 25 year old buying a brand new buick? It's so rare that it's unthinkable. That's why these cars are topping the list, a car is going to last a long time if you never take it over 50.

Mercury is just a limited model rebadged Ford line up, I'd like to see a model by model brake down.
Buick buyers do drive so and are mostly over 50.

I think this is a better graph of the same data: (Land Rover!)

One thing that's interesting is that Buick/Cadillac is grouped together near the top, while Chevy/GMC/Olds/Pontiac are all grouped very close together in the middle.
Maybe there's something to the old saw about "Even though it's the same assembly line, they spend more time on the Buicks"? It implies that GM has different quality targets based on luxury/non-luxury marks.

Re: new JD Power dependability study
Buick is definitely an old person company. Lexus and Caddy have some old people cars and some not so old people cars. Caddy, to me, seems to have been more old person oriented back in the 90s but these days they are trying to angle themselves as the 'sport luxury' lineup, and with the exception of the DTS, are mostly not an old person brand anymore. That seems to be more Lincoln and Buick's stereotype these days.
Mercury - I've honestly never thought of them as an old person's brand, and of their current models, only the Grand Marquis strikes me as obviously for old people.
I will scan and post a copy of the survey I receive from JD Power next time they send me a VDS survey.

Re: new JD Power dependability study
its a good thing they pointed out that hard factual evidence that took years of researching to prove or else I would never believe that buick and cadillac could have so few problems being made by GM and all.

Re: new JD Power dependability study
For what it's worth my '06 Audi A4 had several small issues in the beginning - a check engine light, a very squeeky driver's side seat that was like nails on a chalkboard, and a bit of trouble starting once or twice. That was all in the first 500 miles. They claimed they couldn't find anything wrong with the CEL and starting - they fixed the squeek. Since then the reliability has been perfect.
Though that's not saying much in a 10 month old car with 12k miles on it to date. And it also has more rattles than I could even begin to count.
I would have never bought this car and these rattles would be driving me crazy if I had - but it's a lease, so as long as I don't get stranded, it won't bother me.

Re: new JD Power dependability study
I dont think everyone always understands what these studies are representing. This peticular(sp) study shows problems with new cars purchased in 2003 and monitored for 3 years. Thats one reason you see Olds here.
Its not to be mixed up with inital quality studies that only represent the first 90 days. The dependability study is a much better indicator for buyer of a three year old car in the used market. The inital quality survey is supposed to be more indicative of current quality levels. Looking at the graph in this thread shows just how far GM is behind Toyota in quality. Here is the full press release with top models per segment.

The S-10 lead its segment till the colorado took over, sad to see the drop off. Its sad to see Chevrolet SO far behind toyota.
Heres the current Initial Quality Ranking
