Wiper (single) dead
Wiper (single) dead
Ok, my wipers have a real bad habit of sitting about 6 or 8 inches above where they belong. Well you could always just push them down and it would be ok, but today it totally messed up. I went to push the driver side down (cause it's the side I'm on obviously when I leave the car) and it makes a loud crunch sound and goes down, but the other one stays where it's at. So now the driver side wiper is dead, and the passenger side is doing like usual. It's supposed to rain here for the next few days and tomorrow is my last day off from work so I need to fix it tomorrow if I can. Any ideas on what to do with this?
Re: Wiper (single) dead
I can predict the future.
Hold on.............I'm getting a vision..........yes - it's coming in clear now........
I see...........you - in the rain.........putting two new wiper motors in.

Re: Wiper (single) dead
Or maybe you got lucky and only stripped the splines on the wiper arm, where it goes onto the shaft..
Take the arm off and check the splines.. the shaft is steel the arm is 'pot metal', so the arm strips first [and since it's a tapered shaft, if you clean both well[ the shaft and the arm] you can usually 'recut' the splines into the arm by tightening the nut..]
Still sounds like you need a wiper motor[or more specifically the board in the wiper motor that controls 'parking' etc.. but it's easier to change the whole motor] since they aren't 'parking' properly..

Re: Wiper (single) dead
I took it apart today and I got pretty lucky with what happened. The socket that keeps the driver side arm connected to the passenger arm disconnected. So I just popped it back on. The blades still sit up a little bit from their resting place, but apparently someone without any knowledge of cars put the arms back on before and set them way above where they belong. So now they work better than they did when I bought the car.
Re: Wiper (single) dead
Are they 'parking' properly?[meaning when you shut them off they go down another 3-4" to behind the cowl?]
And yes there are several 'ball and socket' joints on the wiper transmission.. Glad you fixed it..
