02 Grand Am Radio Help

I know this isnt about a camaro but i thought i was try in here first. My friend has an 02 Grand Am GT with the monsoon system. The stock radio displays the station name and song and that fancy stuff. Well we went to buy an Alpine HU and the guy helping us said that we couldn't use a standard wiring harness for the install and that we needed the $120 wiring harness that created a bypass. We were told that Pontiac ran all of the diagnostics through the radio and that if we tried to use the standard harness GM wouldnt be able to work on the car at all. We ended up not getting the radio. I was a little skeptic of this and just wanted to know from someone else. Thanks for any help.

Re: 02 Grand Am Radio Help

I had to get an adapter for my wife's '01 Grand Am. We got it when we purchased a new HU for her car from Crutchfield. It usually sells for $80 but since we bought the HU from them we got the adapter for $40. Parts Express has a Wiring Harness that re-locates the factory HU to the trunk to retain whatever the hell it is it does and provides a wiring harness for the new HU to plug into.

Thanks for the help. Chances are if we get a radio for it I will now go through Crutchfield.
