Atlus Inline Family Of Motors

Am I the only one who wants to see the Atlus Motors Power a performace RWD Car. The I6 MAkes 270 plus Hp in a truck state of tune. We have seen emissions compliant TT I6's that make 400 hp. The 3.5L Turbo I5 makes 315 Hp. I think these Motors could make serious Hp #s. A turbo I5 or I6 could make a lot of Bland cars fun Like GM did in the past. New Cyclone/Typhoon. New GN. I5 turbo AWD POntiacs. I5 Solstice. Special Edition Turbo I6 upcoming RWD Monte Carlo. The List can go on and on.

The Atlas family of engines is great....especially the 4200 I6.

But as we've previously discussed, they are large bulky truck engines. The I6 is both very long and very tall.

And it takes a car like the truck based Bel Air concept to fit the I5.

If they would only fit, they'd be great in cars....

The GenIII mane purpose is a truck motor. The I5 Is not that long. It could fit under the hood of out F-Bods. The I^ is abit on the long side. But why couldnt the I5 fit. Its no taller than the FORD DOCH mod motors. There is no way the I5 cant be made Car ready. There is a article in Super Rod about the power that this family of motors can make. They even hint at Atlus I4 and I5 motors being put in cars. If there is a 4 cyl Solstice I bet it will be the Atlus I4 and not the ecotec. The Atlus I4 is made to be in a RWD car the Ecotec is not.

Interestingly I was told by a good source the I6 will fit in both the V car and Sigma..they just have to slant it like BMW

Boy, that would be great!

My sources tell me that the I6 is both too tall and too long.

Anyone have any other info on that?

I'd rather see them apply the technology to a V8. The "soundtrack" is just way too big a part of the performance car experience.

Our Envoy has more muffler and resonator volume (size not noise) on it than fuel volume

Nope. Holden uses the same 3800 V6s that we use here. Only difference is some unique external pieces for RWD applications. One other difference on the supercharged V6 is that it has a larger diameter pulley, is used as a mid range engine, and has under 230 horsepower (compared to 240...soon to be 250....here).

Someone mentioned earlier this year, don't remember who it was, that the L6 engine would definately not be used in a car, but that the I5 would.

An inline-6 was fitted to the current Opel Omega, the car that the Commodore is based upon. The inline-6 in question was a 2.5 liter DIESEL purchase in from BMW. Since the BMW motor was SOHC, there was much of any problem in fitting it under the Omega's low hoodline.

Is there any reason why an updated Commodore, or even a CTS, would be designed around inline-6 packaging. The answer is a firm NO! GM's Isuzu affiliate is producing a modern 3.0 liter diesel V6, something which can hardly been an easy engineering task from the standpoint of vibration reduction. With the "high feature" V6 going into the RWD Sigma platform CTS, the Altis Inline-6 will probably never see passenger car applications.

(Even diesel experts at Mercedes gave up on a V6 diesel design - so much for the packaging "efficiency" promised by their gasoline V6s. The engine bays of Mercedes from the E-class up are still designed around the inline-6 diesel.)

They used to use Nissan I6s before switching over to GM's corporate 3.8V6 in the 80s.

I think I6s sound quite nice. Did you ever hear the Baja 4200s they used in the desert racing? They had an awesome, high-tech, ripping-silk kind of sound. Not the same as a V8's rumble of course, but no less stirring in my mind .
