My work (dealership) said I have to get a new differential for gears

Apparently gears just don't "bolt in". I have a 94 Formula with 2.73 gears (2 series carrier) and I attempted to have my thunderracing gear/cover package installed at my work. I ordered 3.73 gears specifically for the 2 series carrier, and the tech at my work said I need a new differential for my rear end to work with the gears. The guy didn't even take apart my rear-end and attempt at putting the gears in...just looked at the boxes my package came in and told the service writer I need a differential for the gears.

I've never heard of needing a new differential in order to install a new set of gears. I guess this guy just didn't want to dick around with my gears...unless he's correct. BTW they are Strange 3.73's for a 2 series carrier.

Yes I know I should really have a Speed shop install my gears, but I was quoted a smoking deal with my employee discount at a dealership. Looks like I'll have to go to a speed shop and pay more than double

Uh, it is FOR a 2 series carrier... ie: yours.

Otherwise yes your technician friend would be correct.

They WILL fit if they are the 2 series design as you described them to be.

He probably doesn't know that the aftermarket offers this kind of solution.

You're right, he's wrong. "2-series specific gears" will fit a 2-series carrier. I also had 2-series 3.73's in my 2.73 diff.

sometimes technicians like to take their general knowledge and let it take way to their smarts. as you found out, thats not always a good thing. just have somebody else do it.
