Yea just throw it in neutral and start it back up. Why do you want to know this?

i was driving late last night and i was wondering while i was driving... i wonder what would happen if i threw it in reverse or park.... or if i just shut my car off... and i was thinking about trying the shut off thing but not the switching gears becasue i figured that would F my car up.

I thought i would ask to see how it would hurt my car

Yea dont throw it in reverse or park. My last tranny went out because I threw it in drive while still rolling backward out of my driveway.

I think with 4L60E's they have a safety feature so your car just turns off if you put it in reverse or park while your going over 15 mph.

If you turned the car off while driving down the highway with it in D wouldnt the engine still be turning with no lube?

If the engine is turning it would still have oil pressure becausr the oil pump is driven off of the cam. With the transmission in nuetral it would just coast, but this is bad for the transmission, just like towing it in nuetral, the transmission has to turn but the engine is not turning the front pump on the transmission therefore not lubricating the transmission. Throwing it into park or reverse would lock up the rear tires wether the engine was turned off or not.

[I]put it never in Park if your car is not standing still, the 4L60E has no safty feature for this!!

Well i know for a fact the engine turns off if you put into reverse above a certaine speed. Im not positive what happens if you put it into park though. But anyway why would you do this. Just dont do it.

Turning it off is the same as the engine dying. When I modded my car and didn't have it tuned, it used to die on me all the time, even when I was on the freeway. After it would die, I would just drop it into neutral, restart the engine, and put it back into drive (while moving). Didn't seem to do anything too dramatic to the engine or tranny.

Yes

At least it does for 6 speeds... I would image an auto would not change that though.

Not much in a manual... slow down rather quickly due to engine braking.... pretty much the same in an auto but as stated not good for the transmission..... could get interesting if you lock the ignition when you turn the key with a pending turn.....

Bad shate :alert:

DANGER..... DANGER WILL ROBINSON!!.... DANGER!!! (...arms flailing...)

Lemmie know how it works out if you try it though!

The transmission will attempt (and maybe succeed) to eject from your vehicle

Back in the day, 15 years ago, I would be driving down the road in my 302 Granada, drop it in 2nd, turn the key off, pump the gas twice, then turn the key back on. What happened? BOOM!!! And a foot long flame out the tailpipe. Scares the hell out of people walking down the street. BTW, 3 pumps of the gas pedal is too much. It'll blow the muffler apart... :o
