Did your torque converter kill gas mileage?
Did your torque converter kill gas mileage?
I just put in a Vigilante 3200 stall converter. I love it, made a world of difference in terms of power and feel. Car is absolutely a blast now. Probably the best mod for an A4. I'm a true believer in this mod.
One other change I noted was gas mileage. Car seems to be doing considerably worse in this area. I averaged 14.5 MPG on the last tank. Most of this was city I admit but still not very good at all for a car EPA rated at 19/28. I'm just wondering if anyone else experienced a drop in mileage after putting a torque converter in. Car seems to be running great otherwise. No SES lights, hesitation, or rich exhaust mixture. I even just replaced the plugs. Thanks guys.

Have had a Vig 3600 since 1996. Got 24 mpg highway with first combo, 21 mpg highway with current set up. I suspect your mileage loss may be due due to your overactive right foot

It's a second car so I'm not too concerned with it but just want to make sure nothing's wrong. BTW, it also was given a custom tune so this also could have something to do with it.

My mileage also decreased. If the converter doesn't get a chance to lock-up, then the mileage will go down. Once the converter locks, it's the same as the stock one.
Also, with colder temps, it takes the trans fluid longer to get up to temp so it takes the car longer to allow converter lockup.

and the 3.73's I installed at the same time.

With an OD tranny and a lockup converter there will be very little effect on highway mileage. But it normally kills fuel economy in stop-and-go when a high stall converter is installed.

14MPG with a 3200 converter does not sound to bad. You might want to do some data logging to make sure your custom tune and all sensors are working to the best of your advantage. I was getting 13 to 14 in the city with my Hotcam and after using tunercat and autotap for a couple of hours city driving is around 16 to 17 and runs better than ever.
I have a Y3000 2.0 STR, coupled to 3.73's, and I am averaging 18 MPG.
I was getting 21 MPG with the stock setup with 3.23's.
I will take the loss in milage every time, the vehicle is far more fun to drive now.
