Re: Spherical Rotary Valve Cylinderhead...Wow!

A friend of mine showed that website to me ~3 months ago and I kept meaning to post here about it as I don't understand enough about the design to really comment. So I'm interested to hear y'all's comments so I can pass them on to my friend.

He's convinced that this design will be found in almost every new motor on the planet within 5 years. I tell him that he might be reading too much into the manufacturer's hype and there's bound to be drawbacks as there is with almost any new tech. I don't know how many times I've seen or heard of a new tech and thought it would sweep the planet in a matter of weeks only to be disappointed.

Examples include electromagnetically actuated valve timing, magnetically controlled shocks, hybrid electric technology, CVT/IVT, etc...

How do these not require lubrication? Are they metal or Ceramic, I heard ceramic parts didn't need lubrication at higher temperatures?

It would seem like a natrual progression of OHC engines with the decreased area on top of the heads BUT I still don 't get how they expect it to not need lubrication, even the MAZDA Renesis engines eat a quart of oil every 5K miles or so.

Thats been out for how many years now.
It's been a lot. Doesn't exactly seal well.

This stuff is old and expensive. I believe it was introduced in the mid 90's.

I remember reading the talk about it years ago, but hadn't really seen any pictures as nice as this one. That's what struck me more than anything else.

Yep, I heard about it 10 years ago. It works off a similar principle as the Wankle engine, but in the actual valve train. Good thought, poorly executed.

You can also buy OHC conversion kits for small block chevys from Ardema.

Re: Spherical Rotary Valve Cylinderhead...Wow!

looks intresting looks like it has potential...

but i figure that has more rotating mass then the current valvetrain

Yea I remembe reading about those like 2 years ago.. they were testing them on some motorcycles and some marine applications.. nothing for cars though. As for the other ones.. checked out the website.. looks pretty intresting. only think I would want it a cover to cover the sprockets
