Can anyone suggest upgrades for my Z28?

For starters this site is awesome!! Bought a 2001 Z28 Vert 5 days ago. 44k miles auto Tranny, No traction control option, Orange Sunset metallic I believe is what the paint is called. Being a former Ford man, I must say that I was missing out, This car is awesome!!!!!!!!!
This is my first F-body. I love this car. Spanked a Celica GT, and a 2005 Mustang GT so far. Buddy of mine who has had several F types said that exhaust is Catback, stated he could tell by the Catyletic converters position on the exhaust. Has lunch box tips, I assume they are stock. Is a Catback exhaust stock? He suggested KN filter, and maybe Bora exhaust as upgrades. He has a Subaru STI that he has done several mods to, and I can run with it, but can only get a little distance on him due to the fact he is a really bad pilot. However when his shifts are on, its real close, or I lose. When I say I lose, we are not at a track or anything, we are just going from green light to about 80 before I shut it down. I borrowed whats called a G-tech device. Plugs into the cig lighter and reads 0-60 times Qt mile time. Best time I've pulled 0-60,is 5.15. Is that really possible? As I have read that this car stock is rated at 5.5 sec 0-60. (Then again stock HP is listed at 315, when I have been told its closer to 345 right?). I am guessing this 100$ Gtech device may not be that accurate. Best time for his little ugly go-cart STI is 5.0 sec 0-60.

So I guess my questions are as follows.

1. What is catback exhaust? Could it be a stock item? Is that what I have stock? Also is there an advantage or disadvantage to the "lunchbox" tips I have????

2. Is a 5.15 0-60 time for an LS1 vert, auto tranny realistic? I have been told that the verts are slower cause the frame is reinforced somehow and that adds wieght, any truth to that?

3. I would like to continue to make this car my everyday ride, However I would like to do some mods that wont kill my car, but might help me get a jump on this fregan pesky STI, and I would really love some suggestions.

4. Car has Goodyear Eagles, any tire suggestions?

BTW did I mention I love this car? I had always believed that the F body cars handled like crap, and for what seems to be a pretty big car, I just point it and it responds! I am so hooked on the LS1, and an awesome suspension.

Well welcome to the site. Although I'm not a 4th gen guy, I can still help you with your questions.

1) A cat back exhaust is simply what it sounds like, the parts in the exhaust systme from the cat-back. These include an intermediate pipe, and over-the-axle pipe, a muffler, and the tips. So yes you have one stock. When most people say that a cat-back would be a good idea for your car they are reffering to an aftermarket system from the catylytic converter back. The cat and everything before it (manifolds, y-pipe) remain stock.

2) That does seem a little too quick. Either your launching perfect and shifting (assuming your shifting your auto manually) absolutely perfectly, or the thing is off, but not by far. Most likely the latter. Although they are quick cars, I don't think they were that fast, at least not an automatic convertible car.

3) Long tube headers into a Mufflex exhaust (or you could just get a cat-back system like the Borla or something, whichever your into, but the Mufflex will give you better performance and in my opinion, better sound. $$$ though), 2400-2800 stall converter, LS6 intake, chip (good one spend the extra $$$, it's worth it), maybe a few other things that'll still be a good daily driver and not too expensive.

However, simple things like changing the wires, plugs, ATF fluid and filter, rear-end grease, motor oil and filter, and air filter wil pick up probably a couple hp probably just because besides the oil/filter, it's probably all the original stuff in the car.

4) Those are pretty good tires. Are yours worn or anything? If not, I'd use those until they need to be replaced, otherwise what size wheels and tires do you have, 16's or 17's?

Glad to hear you like the car. Enjoy it!

16's. Tires are all but new. I dont think I am launching perfect. Was getting bad tire spin when I first got the car, have been laying in the throttle slow to avoid that, and then romping it pretty much. I have to be losing time from that. I just didnt think that time was accurate. Maybe close but not accurate.

I think I priced the Bora parts at about 800$, what would the LS6 chip run? $ wise that is.

Enjoying would almost be accurate, I may actually be in love.

Also, would a more throaty exhaust maybe "rattle my vert to death cause it is a vert? The car is cherry as is. Not a scratch, not a rattle. Would Exhaust help to excelerate rattles?

No, not really. the mufflex systme is probably your best bet. It is very expensive (I believe somewhere around $1k + LT headers) but it is well, well worth it. The combination of the Mufflex system wiht long tubes will be absolutely killer, and defintely worth the extra cost over the Borla.

As for tires, are you looking for all season or summer tires?

It actually wasn't an LS6 chip, it was an LS6 intake I was reffering to. I'm not sure on the cost of that either, I don't own a fourth gen, however I do read the board on occasion, and it seems that people like this. I'm not sure on what brand to go with for a chip (as I mentioned I'm not a 4th gen camaro guy, so I have no clue). Try searching the 4th gen board.

palerider:
I started with suspension. Eibach sway bars, UMI strut tower brace, UMI panard bar (UMI is on ebay. Also check out J&M Products. They have really good prices on suspension products and are supporters of this board.) I also want to add some subframe connectors.
The second thing is horse power. I started with a MTI clear air lid (+5-10 hp). I don't want NOS or supercharger so I'm not sure what to get next. Perhaps a better exhaust, but thats a little pricey.

That's also good. Suspension is probably what I'd do first besides a few cheap performance things. The car is penty fast. I suggested engine upgrades because in my experiance that's what people like to do first, after they do some work on the car with simple bolt-ons and stuff, it's usually easier to get into suspension afterwards. Then some of thie things I mentioned for the engine would be good. Samualt suggested some good suspension stuff and pointed out some good sites, so check those out too.

Hey palerider, nevermind about the LS6 intake. I forgot that 2001+ cars have them. I was thinking it was 2002 Camaros that got them. So a lid from whichever manufacturer you choose will give you a nice performance boost for only a short time of work.
