150+ more HP = transmission or driveshaft failure?
150+ more HP = transmission or driveshaft failure?
if i were to add around 150 more horsepower to my stock LT1 engine in a 1994 z28, would i need to swap my driveshaft to one to handle more power or do anything to my transmission or any other part of my car. basically, will any parts of my car definately fail because of more horsepower. thanks for the help
Re: 150+ more HP = transmission or driveshaft failure?
Always helpful to tell us what transmission you're running
Horsepower isn't what's going to cause failures, it's how you use it. If you launch hard,
5K rpm dump the clutch, on sticky tires (ET Streets), you're rearend, driveshaft and clutch will be "taxed". On an A4 car, the tranny sees the biggest loads. If you're running street tires, the tires will go up in smoke long before the other parts.

Re: 150+ more HP = transmission or driveshaft failure?
i really am clueless on the transmission. it is automatic, with the B & M shift kit. that is it. everything else is stock on the car for a 1994 z28. thanks
Re: 150+ more HP = transmission or driveshaft failure?
A stock automatic will not hold up to a 150 horsepower increase very long. You would need to beef it up a little or be prepared to fix it after it broke. Now, a manual would be different. With a better clutch you would be fine. But, like OBE1 said, a lot depends on how you use it. You could drive a little while with that much extra horsepower if you absolutly babied it, but something tells me you wouldn't with that much HP.
Re: 150+ more HP = transmission or driveshaft failure?
I tell people that if they are serious about upgrades that they should start at the rear of the car and move forward. Upgrade the suspension with LCAs, SFCs, panhard bar, etc...Yes you should look into a new driveshaft (I use a 3" steel one good for cars running 9s...) and have the transmission built by a competent trans shop that does performance rebuilds on the 4L60E. 150 hp is a big number, make sure your driveline can handle it or its all worthless..
Re: 150+ more HP = transmission or driveshaft failure?
Depends on how hard ya "hook" it. There are guys around here running a 200 shot with everything stock and DR's but they will soon break something,it's a matter of time. The rear will go first with a stick and ya will probably twist your DS. The tranny if it's a 4L60E will take "some" abuse.
