Question Do your A4 3.73s whine like crazy?

I just had some Strange 3.73s for a series 2 carrier installed, and the install guy said there was no way around whining starting from about 50mph. What gives?!?!?

Strange gears are noisy.

Re: Do your A4 3.73s whine like crazy?

My Strange gears aren't very noisy.

My installer called Strange about it. They told him that the gears are cut and designed to be set up for strength (deeper). Because of that, they're going to make some noise.

I don't really hear mine of the exhaust or stereo unless I'm listening for them.

I have always heard that it's normal when you add gears to the stock 10 bolt. Some do and some don't so it's kind of hit or miss. I myself am dying for some 3.73's but I refuse to buy them for this car. I figure when my 10 bolt snaps, I'll order a 12 bolt with 3.73's in them. That way I won't have to worry about noise or paying twice for the same mod.

So I'm sorry to tell you that while I'm sure it's annoying, it's also considered normal. Just crank up some tunes and drown it out

Gears in my sig and yes they whine considerably loud. But they've held up well to 23,000 miles of street/ strip abuse. My choice of gear for the 10 bolt would be Strange or GM only.

My Strange 3.73s whine between 35-50mph. Nothing unbearable, but if you listen for it you can hear it.

mine whine a little too........you can hear it best when you are off the gas and slowing down....when cruising the exhaust pretty much drowns it out.

Thumbs up Re: Do your A4 3.73s whine like crazy?

WHEW!!! I thought I was alone. These gears don't feel as strong as my Motives did after installed, but then again that sumbitch has pinion teeth missing. Thanks guys.

I'd like to know that one too?!

From my experience, a friend's experience, and everything I've read on this board, there is NO CONSISTANCY or "RULE" among BRANDS or RATIOS in terms of gear whine.

I've had Richmond 3.73's (on the factory 2-series carrier) that whined so bad, it was like an ambulance chasing me!? They were installed and re-installed with my Dad's help, and then re-re-installed by a "professional" gear shop without any difference.

I now have Richmond 4.10's on a 3-series carrier (again, installed myself), and they can barely be heard --- not much louder than my factory 2.73's.

My buddy put Richmond 3.73's in his '95 Z28 (A4 - 2-series) and they whine a little bit, but not totally unbearable.

It really does seem "hit or miss".

Re: Do your A4 3.73s whine like crazy?

I have had my 3.73s in for so long I have forgotten what brand they are.
Must be 100k now. They had a pretty good whine initially but the guy I had install em redid it cause it didn,t sound right and they have been fine.
Little whine that I can,t even hear now without really trying.

Re: Do your A4 3.73s whine like crazy?

The whine isnt noticeable in my car at all...(with Strange 3.73s)

But that might be because I run LTs with an ORY through a 3" cutout

but seriously..Id have to really concentrate on it to hear the whine

I can feel the sound of the pinion hitting the ring unevenly, never happened till my 3.42s were going out. Thus, the feeling of not being as strong.
