optispark

can anyone explain to me what the optispark is and what it does ? Why do they go bad ? any info would help. My granfather is having a problem with his lt1 and I think it might be his optispark. he had a computer analysis on it and it said he needs a new distributor... but i thought lt1s didnt have them. :confused:

I would go to the LT1/LT4 section and do a search as this topic has been discussed countless times. You will find immediate answers to your questions if you spend a little time "searching"

Optispark = Distributor in an unusual location, with an optical cam position sensor thrown in to complicated things.

Above suggestion is a good one.... go to LT1/LT4 Engine Tech, hit "search" and enter "Optispark". You should get several pages of threads pertaining to it.

Most common problem is misfiring or even "no start" if it gets wet.... e.g. - car wash, large puddle, washing down engine, coolant leaking from water pump weep holes, etc.

What year is his LT1? What problems is he having?

There are two different versions of the Optispark.... vented and non-vented. Which one you need is determined by the year of the engine, which you never told us.
