Harder to work on, LS1 Vette or LS1 F-body?
Harder to work on, LS1 Vette or LS1 F-body?
While I'm working on my current LT1 car, and promising myself never to buy another LT1 car again, I'm wondering whats easier to work on. I've seen a magazine article on replacing the clutch in a LS1 vette and the whole drivetrain has to come out. And the t/a, well, thats all I've ever had and they're not bad, except for the damn LT1 and optispark/timing cover seals issue. The vette seems harder to modify. If anyone has any opinions, they'd be appreciated. The LS1 F-bodys seem much simpler, reliable, and easier to work on than the LT1. I had one (99 Formula) but not long enough to work on.

i dont see how changing the clutch in an F-body is any easier. You have to remove the whole tranny to replace the clutch in my LS1 SS (ive had to have it done 2 times)
I dont own a Vette yet, but it also seems to be easier access to the engine than in my SS.
Just my two cents.

It was more than just the tranny, I'll look for the article, but it was basically the whole underneath. I'm really just wondering what are the unique areas between the two. Kinda like for the LT1; impossible spark plug change w/stock manifolds, the crazy plug wire routing along the heads, the retarded optispark with its allergy to water, the seals in the timing cover that just add places to leak, intake gasket leak. Stuff like that I guess.

The majority of the ENGINE is more accessible on a 'Vette. Everything else is easier on an F-body as far as I can tell
. But, I don't really have much first-hand experience on a 'Vette, so I can't say for sure about anything beyond the engine bay. That's about the worst part of the F-bodies ... getting to #6 & #8

I have never worked on a vette either, but i can guaren damn tee the engine is MUCH more accessable in the vette. Especially the top rear of the engine.
Re: Harder to work on, LS1 Vette or LS1 F-body?
when you do a clutch on a vette(c5's) you got to take the whole drivtrain out. The rear trans axle has to come out so you can get to the torque tube so you can get to the clutch. You cant just take out the torque tube, its sandwhiched betweet the motor and trans axle.

Corvette is easier for engine work because the cowl is not in the way. Corvette is more difficult for electrical work and transmission/rear end work and the parts are usually more expensive.
Re: Harder to work on, LS1 Vette or LS1 F-body?
I think I'm qualified to answer this...
For basic tune up purposes, changing plugs, wires, etc, and things like headers, I would say the Corvette is far simper. When you get into more complicated things like cam swaps, there is a little more to remove on a Corvette because the whole front steering assembly is in front of the engine instead of under it, but once thats out of the way and believe me its alot easier than it looks, the Corvette is still easier to work on.
I would much rather change the clutch in my SS than my Vette, I can pull a T56 out of an f-body in about an hour by myself, and thats with hand tools. As far as my Vette goes, you pretty much have to remove the rear diff, trans, torque tube, and bellhousing as 1 unit, there is no driveshaft to remove, and you cant just pull one piece. It's all or nothing.
Suspension wise, the Vette wins hands down. Shocks are a piece of cake, especially because there are no coil springs. There is no need to ever change the control arms, because they are forged aluminum from the factory. You can lower a C5 with a jack, and a wrench, and if you really want it to be in the weeds you need to change some bolts and cut a bit of bushing, no changing springs or any of that bs.

Re: Harder to work on, LS1 Vette or LS1 F-body?
well i have had and worked on both and considering you dont have to do anything to the suspension or rear end to keep the vettes power from breaking the car apart i would consider it easyer to work on. the hardest part is it being so low to the ground over the f-body. but engine mods are a breez over a f-body.
thats just me
