tach's shot

My tach needle no longer works. It was coming on and off and then the time periods between on and off got longer and longer...and now it wont come on at all.

Is this a common problem?...lose cable?...idk

How do i fix this?...or better yet..how do i get to the tach? do i need to pull off the top part of the dash?

Re: tach's shot

Just something to look at, but pull the cap and rotor and inspect the three wire harness connections at the module. Really check the one on the inside that plugs into the pick up coil. I had an 88 iroc 350 TPI that the tach was going crazy and later on the car started running like crap. I replaced the entire distributor because the connection between the module and pick up was corroded so badly that the plastic connector was rotted off. After that, the car ran great and the tach worked.
