Plastic Bag on Exhaust!!!!

While driving home from work the other day I ran over a plastic shopping bag that blew under the Z. Well at first I thought nothing of it, but when I got home I could smell burnt plastic. I looked under the car and low and behold it was fried to the pipe before the cat. I took a putty knife and scraped all of it off, but I still get that burning plastic smell when the car warms up. Is there any kind of solvent that I can use to get the rest of it off?

I wouldn't even bother - you removed most of it, so let the rest burn itself up. It won't take long.

Re: Plastic Bag on Exhaust!!!!

I bet a little sand paper or a wire brush will take most of it off.

I don't know man...I pretty much filed it down to the metal with the putty knife. I'll try sandpaper. Thanks!!

Re: Plastic Bag on Exhaust!!!!

I'd heard that the smell sticks with the car for a while.. thankfully I've never experienced it. It seems to make sense that if you were to take some type of abrasive and sand it down to the metal, then the smell would go away much faster?

Re: Plastic Bag on Exhaust!!!!

Try nail polish remover or laquer thinner, either of those will remove the plastic residue from the metal.
