gm limited slip additive

hey, stupid question for ya. is it gonna hurt my rearend if i go without the gm limited slip additive for a couple days? i had to replace the gasket on the moser due to it leaking (went with rtv this time) and i dont have easy access to the gm lubricant right now. ill be putting at least a hundred miles on it before i can get the additive. i can get some for it today but i'd have to make a roadtrip out of it. i'd rather wait till monday when i'm near a dealership to pick some up.

You should be fine, the rear clutches will be grabby on turns causing some noise.

Re: gm limited slip additive

I was searching and I found this thread... I was just wondering, the other day my moser started leaking also. Can you tell me where you got the gasket is there a part number? can I just use some gasket-maker? For now I just drained the oil and put in some pennzoil 80/90 with AC Delco limited slip additive, and put some silicone on the outside all along the lower part of the rear where the leak seems to be, however it's still losing oil. Thanks.

Re: gm limited slip additive

i drained all the oil out of the rearend. then i took and cleaned both mating surfaces of the rearend and cover. after which i applied a small bead of blue rtv to the rearend. let it set ten minutes to cure. then place the cover back on and tighten down. i tightened mine to about 30ft. lbs. seems to have held fine. make sure to let it sit a day or two before replacing fluid. also might want to mar the mating surface of the rearend and the cover with some fine grit sandpaper. just real lightly. helps the adhesive maintain a seal.

i dont know if this is exactly what is recommended. however, this is what i did and seems to have worked fine. hope this helps.

I have driven mine around for a few days without the additive. Probably not 100 miles though. You will get some pretty good clunking going on in there. I didn't damage my ring n pinion.

Re: gm limited slip additive

clunking?!?! you should get ANY "clunking" from not having additive. if it really IS clunking, then you have some other issues.

Re: gm limited slip additive

This was years ago. About 1996. I changed the rear end fluid. Didn't add the addative, and it would clunk ocassionally. I went to the dealer on the next monday, put in the additive, and no clunking ever again. As I have always added the additive every time now. So yes you can get some clunking. Atleast mine did.

Thx:

Re: gm limited slip additive

maybe your description of a "clunk" is different then mine. the only way it would stop a clunk would be if there is something wrong with your rear end. say you dont add it and the clutches are grabbing too hard. if something is outta spec in your rear, then you might hear a clunk, but only because something is outta spec. maybe too much backlash.
