STS VS. Supercharger.........???

I tried searching, it didn't help me much...

It's up in the air right now. I found a good price for the STS kit. I've heard of a guy getting an ATI for cheaper than the STS.....???.......?????!!!HOW???!?!!!!

Last time I priced the ATI it was insane pricey!! Unless I'm not looking in the right places...

I like the STS theroy...GENOIUS!! I've allways liked turbos, BUT.........I've also allways like the superchargers.....

Pro's......cons....???I understand that the supercharger requires power for it to be driven, and the turbo needs only exhaust flow....possible backpressure gain..What size injectors will I need and what size fuel pump....soemthings I have no prob figuring out, but this isn't one of them....I'm lost.....

I've also heard of ppl not liking the idea of having an oil line running the leingth of the car....well, we've got fuel lines running the same length...but that won't kill the motor, just set the car on fire....

help!!???............?????

Heres the way i look at it...STS work, but not as good as an underhood setup. Due to the volume of piping used you recircualte air from turbo to engine, there is an issue of lag. Not to mention if you decide to go with a custom fab front mount setup, there is even more volume to fill.STS claims that the pipes from turbo to TB bleed off some of the heat, and provide a 50% intercooling efficieny. I just bought a D1SC procharger kit for my z28, and am happy with my decision. I have seen the STS turbos go bad because of a piece of ceramic from the Catalytic converter coming apart and destroying the turbo. Turbos like to run warm, and STS claims that it lowers the turbo temps do to being in ambient air...People with these kits need to let it warm to optimal temps before boosting. I like the ATI kit because its intercooled boost to help avoid detonation and add more power, and some are self contained, so running oil lines are not an issue. I see boost with my d1sc at just under 2500 rpm, and pulls like a mother to redline. Belt whine is another thing i live about the kit, and the surge valve releasing pressure when TB blades close sounds sick. I also paid a lot less for the d1sc kit than the STS kit...Got everything (including 255 walbro and 42# injectors) brand new for about 4000. The STS kit is 4000 ish, W/O fuel system improvments. Either way you will be happy IMO, but i love the procharger. If i went with a turbo setup, i would go with an underhood setup with fmic and wrap the turbo in a blanket. Let us know what your gunna do! Good Luck!

Supercharger. The other choice could've been a hampster on a wheel and I would've chose it.

i took a 630 rwhp d1 setup off for my sts

I don't see why you couldn't throw some fins on the pipe coming off the STS to the TB and actually turn the intake pipe into a intercooler.

Thats funny, its exactly what I said, just weld fins onto the piping, find do a lot for cooling while moving.

And you're taking your STS off for a conventional setup. You so fickle ;)

Everyone throws out lag, but i dont think 14psi at 3500rpms and 633rwtq at 3600rpms is that bad of lag from a base kit.

I LOVE the relese valve sound....:drule:....even for turbos....HOW IN THE H3LL? Did you find an ATI kit for cheaper than an STS...lat time I checked available prices they were ungodly expensive....somewhere around $4500...mabie...Well that's at the time when I ALMOST dropped the $ for a vortech kit. Knowing what I know now I don't like all the rigging that goes into it. That's prob why I thought it was expensive, comparing to basic V-SC kit...But self-contained....I likey!! I oil pan drilling... ;)

Well if I'm gonna spend 4gs on an FI kit (STS) I'd mind aswell get an ATI kit. What's the stock kit boost wise? 6lbs?? I understand that the LS1's have a high comp ratio and boost is a touchy thing. What else will I need? Besides fuel upgrades. Internals? I will get a cam for it FIRST so I dont have to move the SC to get to the cam, that is one of the reasons I was thinking about the STS...Underhood space not effected.. I have heard of PPL getting special cams for N20, is it he same for FI?? I might actually do a H&C before the SC....

I will be doing full roller valve trane.....FLOW THEROY!!! YESS!!! It will be about 6-8 months before I get it, though. I just want to get my mind straight before I settle.. I am NOT cutting corners w/ this car...If I'm going to dive into the motor I mind aswell do other things while I'm in there..

Thanx for the help everyone!! Give me more ideas!

500+rwhp/633rwtq=12.1

12.1 isn't a good et for the power, but it did trap 126 I believe. Hell I've seen 560-575rwhp PROCHARGED vettes run 12.80's-12.90's at 117-118mph all night long at our local tracks. Doesn't mean procharger systems suck though.

the end solution was always a huge front mount and stroker, but i got side tracked with the sts last year(fun challenge), it certainly has been a blast and made me love turbo thats for sure. Im looking forward to the new setup but im also gonna miss the ease of the sts and the look of peoples faces when there bitch slapped buy it.

Just out of curiosity, what was the best time you got with your car and the STS? I just dont remember you ever posting times, but I know you were one of the highest powered STS vehicles (over 600rwhp, right?)

I'd take the STS over the Centrifugal supercharger any day unless it is a full race setup.

I'd take a front mount over the STS any day...

actually the track just opened yesterday where i live. Motor is sold though so I cant really run it unless the kid will let me. Im guessing at 14 psi it would have been a low 11 do to nittos and soft launching. I got 11.5 at 127 out of the d1 at 600 rwhp and this is defineltly faster but i dont know how well it would come out of the hole with the 6 speed. At 10 psi it was 639 615 tq at 14 psi it was over 700 rwhp before the head gasket blew...fixed it but never went back to dyno since it was decemeber and the car was being put into storage. Then over the winter I decided I wanted a big stroker which was gonna go with the sts but phamspeed popped up and i liked the kit and one thing led to another and im going for 1000rwhp on pump gas real soon. I believe i was at the limit with the sts for what i wanted to do.

309rwhp, 338rwtq  Times?

LT1 STS (http://www.jlturbo.com/vids/JL_LT1.wmv)

Yes 12.1 @ 126 and the MPH is what i was looking for at the time. A stock 10 bolt and street suspension = I wasn't set up or looking at my ETs as you can see in the video. Now if i were to spend some $$$$ to set it up for the track, and intern not ride well on the street, i garante that wouldn't be a 12.1 ;)
Yes, a conventional system would be nice, but the STS kit has given many people the option to go turbo that normally would not have. The kit has proven to put down power. I have had the kit on for 2 years and no compaints.

As of now, at sea level, 13.1@107.x, in decent air.

Not the quickest for the power level for sure.... But since I "wasn't set up or looking at my ETs " then hopefully I should pick up a good second or two in the quarter  :D
