I need to knwo is the tire will stick enough to protect the rim from curb damage. I know that 275 will, but 265 or 255???

Re: 265 or 255/40/17 on 17x9.5 inch wheel ???

Its simple math.... the outside width of a 9.5" wide wheel is about 10.5". That's from the outside edge of one bead retention flange to the other.... the part that will "scrape" on a curb.

A 255 tire (25.0" diameter) is going to be about 10.1-10.2" wide, the 265 tire (25.3-25.4 diameter) about 10.7-10.9" wide.... not much protection for the edge of the wheel. The 275 gains you another 1/4" on each side of the wheel.

Both those tires are also a smaller diameter than stock. The 275/40 is the correct match.
