does anyone know the 1/4 mile time and MPH for a stock SS. trying to settle argument with roomate...i read in car and driver that a stock SS should go a 12.97 @ 112mph...is this true?

 

I agree with Robvas. That trap is unheard of on a stock F-body.The best I have read about is 12.8 @ 109 and that takes an expert driver, sea level track and favorable weather conditions. More of a normal time would be 13.2 @ 107.

 

Few break 12's stock. It all depends the car, driver, track and weather conditions etc etc etc... Most run mid to low 13's, but have seen a few run low 14s.

For instance, I ran my car after I had it for 2 months and wasn't really used to launching it yet so I ran a 13.56 @ 107 mph. Haven't been back since to get any new times.

BTW, just because its an SS means nothing. Z's, Formulas etc run the same times.

 

Actually a SS or WS6 has a slightly better suspension so it helps. Not mention they have more tire to grip with too.

And no the wheels don't weigh more.

 

Actually there is nothing about the SS/WS6 standard suspension or the upgraded SS suspension that is going to do anything to improve straight line performance.

And the wheels don't have to weigh more, simply extending the wheels out a 1/2 inch is going to impact your rotating mass.

 

How do you figure? It's kinda dumb to say that.

 

You want to release the front end to maximize the weight transfer ... a larger sway bar, wheels and stiffer shocks up front are all counter productive to that goal.

 

Agreed, and since the SS's 17" tires are lower profile, they'll have stiffer sidewalls which will also negatively affect straight-line traction.

Point is, the right car on the right day with the right driver can do ~12.8 - 12.9, but 112 mph isn't in line with any stock LS1 .....~103 - 108 is normal .

 

as long as we're all being smart asses, no it doesn't increase you're rotating mass, it increases your moment arm.

 

Positive or negative a suspension affects everything. That was my point.

 

I interpeted his point to be that the SS gets will get better times over a Z28 do to better a suspension ...

My point is that what differences are available for the SS suspension are more suited to road course handling. As far as drag racing, the SS suspension for the most part is no improvement over a Z28 and counter to what needs to be done to improve the suspension for drag racing.

 

And don't forget, not all LS1's are geared the same either.

That's one of the other reasons I like my SS, didn't have to worry about 2.73 gears.

 

I have NEVER seen or heard of a dead-stock SS running 12's or above a 107. Where and when was this done, and was this on the stock tires it came with, cuz MOST people have problems hooking with drag radials, let alone z-rated tires on 17's.

 

OK.. my BONE STOCK Z28 not SS has run multiple 13.1's at 107 and 108.
During the summer here in Houston.

Trying to get past this rainy season to get another run in cooler weather to see if I can nudge my 12's out. This is with 2.0 short times on street tires not DR's. This is factory bone stock. No mods whatsoever.

Larger tires will weight more and increase your rotating mass. That means it will weight more and more the more it spins.. 275's are over kill unless you are doing some serious mods. Why do I say that? Because I have seen 245's hook with over 400rwtq on an Fbody. Just need to do your suspension correctly. The name of the game isnt who can spend the most and get the most, its who can spend the least with the least amount of mods and get the most.. I love tromping on LS1's that have a few bolt ons.
Your single best mod ever - DRIVER. Learn to drive your car people. Get to the track. Thats where the best learn.

SS = Heavier Z with more options.

ok, so mabey the 112mph was wrong, but i definatly heard of FEW stock SS's runnign HIGH 12's. i was just trying to figure out...also helps to know that my stock best run of a 13.3 @107 is pretty good/average.
