Do blower cars need stiffer valve springs?
Do blower cars need stiffer valve springs?
Assuming I hold my redline to 5250 per prochargers's instructions for installing a d1sc on an lt1, are my factory valve springs ok? Or does boost reduce the spring's ability to control the intake valve? exhaust?
Re: Do blower cars need stiffer valve springs?
You might as well do it. It will be hard to hold the rpm's that low when the boost is building. Go ahead and put better springs to get the valves shut fast!
Re: Do blower cars need stiffer valve springs?
My rpm's should stay reasonable as I had my pcm tuner set my redline to 5200. But do blown motors NEED stiffer springs due to boost??
Re: Do blower cars need stiffer valve springs?
IMHO, yes. Another 15-20lbs of seat pressure makes a lot of sense to me. I have no data to support this, but it seems logical to me at least on the intake side. The area of the intake valve is >3sq. in. With 10lbs of boost, there will be ~30lbs of pressure on the backside of the valve. More seat pressure will counteract this. OTOH, I see no reason for a spring with a higher rate.

If you are doing a supercharger, and have a stock internal LT1, I would upgrade the valvesprings.
I think we need more spring pressure, but sometimes its a pain in the *** to spec out springs.
