RacingTiger04 11-27-2004, 04:30 PM i have a 94 Z28 and last time i got in it for alittle bit it wouldnt shift into 2nd at wot... so i didnt think much of it since it was related to a 700r4 but the other day on the interstate same problem from 2nd to 3rd... anyone know what would cause this and how to fix it? hope it isnt a sign that the trans is gettin ready to go :( oh and also if it helps any it also seems like it waits a long time before it starts to shift at just normal throttle.. like it shifts into 2nd at about 3500rpm at around 1/4 throttle
thx in advance for any help
speed_demon24 11-27-2004, 11:57 PM Does it feel like its slipping, and are the shift softer than before. Also smell the fluid. Chances are your trans is on its way out though...
RacingTiger04 11-28-2004, 10:38 AM still shiftin same as ever even jerks a little when the trans is cold in the mornins. dont think its slippin at all, im thinkin its the cable that hooks up to the throttle body tellin it when to shift maybe needing adjusted, mostly cause its not slipping... im just lookin for all the things it possibly could be to check, but ill find out if its that cable tonight, gonna try to adjust it... also gonna change the fluid in it and put a shift kit in and hope it always shifts like it does when its cold :p thanks for some things to check though! im hopin its just the cable because of the fact that it still shifts pretty well and the high rev normal shifts seem like that cable may be a little tight makin it think its gettin more than it is... i hope anyway =/
anyone else have any idea? does sound like its startin to go out even to me but its still shiftin well other than the long wait before it does shift (though it shifts instantly when it does decide to shift to the next gear) and no wot shift at all...
12SCNDZ 11-28-2004, 07:45 PM Um...Definitely NOT a TV cable. Your '94 is elecronically controlled, and has no cable.
Sounds like an internal problem to me. It's pretty common for the 60E to develop trouble shifting at high RPM's after they get some age on them. Your delayed 1-2 shift is probably the 2-4 band not holding, and the delayed 2-3 shift is more than likely the 3-4 clutches not holding.
Sorry to be the "bearer of bad news", but I've been building thse things for over 14 years, so I know what the symptoms are..

RacingTiger04 11-29-2004, 12:28 AM ouch.. it just seems wierd cause it is shiftin PERFECT at high rpms thats not the problem, its just wot i can hold it in gear till redline at just over half throttle and it shifts perfectly but if i hold it wide open it basically doesnt even attempt to shift? still think thats the 2-3 band and 3-4 clutches? i hope not but if uve been building them for 14 years ild pretty much assume you're right.. it just throws me off ebcause it does shift fine even at high rpms just cant hold it wide open, i can even hold it wide open to the usual shift point and let off just enough for it to shift to the next gear and get right back on it... ive been testin it a bit tryin to figure it out, it bugs the hell outta me cause im just lookin for any sign i can find that its not the trans goin, cause that was my first assumption :(
94Zpower 11-29-2004, 08:38 AM once mine started having problems shifting at wot my trans lasted a few more weeks and that was it! so its definetly the sign of a tranny starting to die,
12CNDZ could hook you up with a tough 4L60e, pm him.
RacingTiger04 11-29-2004, 04:22 PM that sucks... guess ill just put the shift kit in and hope it helps it last a few months so i can save some extra cash and get a good 4l60e... any ideas how much a well built one would cost anyone?
94Zpower 11-29-2004, 04:25 PM PM 12CNDZ he build them professionally and has good prices check out the web page

RacingTiger04 12-01-2004, 10:21 PM wellp, 2nd gear is still shiftin hard in the car but third is goin downhill fast... definately the trans takin a dump and at bare minimal the 3-4 clutches are about gone cause when it does shift you cant tell at all and any kind of rpms on the motor and it wont shift =/ found a local shop that my dad deals with a lot, they do a really good job and if i take the trans out and take it to em theyll do a full rebuild new torque converter and all for around 600 not that bad i guess just sucks cause i was savin to put true duals on it and now i ahve to get the trans fixed ... guess its good that i was savin for the car though =/ ah well thanks for all the help everyone
94Zpower 12-02-2004, 09:33 AM Dont forget that you get what you pay for and at $600 I am sure that they do an ok job,but these trannies are weak in stock form and even a stock car can blow one so getting a CPT build is no doubt more expensive today but will be cheaper and alot less headache long term, just my opinion,
Good luck.
RacingTiger04 12-02-2004, 11:17 PM its a $1000 job, its gettin done by the same guy that built my dads 83 camaro which is pushin out around 500hp with an LS1 bored 30 over... its a damn good job but my dad is gettin me a deal on it cause were gonna take the trans out ourselves and take it up there and let him rebuild it, its not as much stuff as those that 12SCNDZ does but he is gonna put a much tougher sprag gear and clutches in it than it comes with, so its not a cheap rebuild and ive seen this guy do some pretty insane jobs. imho totally worth it all around. but thx for the warning as i know you didnt know all of this :)
RacingTiger04 12-07-2004, 01:29 AM ok im beggining to wander if this is the trans screwin up badly or not, gave it a major test the other day to see if it was slippin, took it up monteagle in teh gear that wasnt shifting the worst Drive... it wasnt slipping at all, and today its shifting better than it was 3 days ago.. which was it wouldnt shift into drive at 4k+rpms and now it nails it easily, i havent attemtped to test it and let it shift on its own again yet (ever since these probs ive been holdin it down in its functioning 1st to 2nd gears as much as possible and NEVER let it shift itself wide open as that was what i first noticed as the problem) so now im afraid to run it WOT and let it shift itself still wot because i dont want to mess up the clutches by doing so, but it seems like its getting in better shape? clogged filter could maybe cause these odd problems? still havent gotten around to that shift kit either.. bad weather and a full garage prevented it =/ anyone experienced this kind of madness before? @_@ i just cant get over it one day not shiftin into drive over 4k and all of a sudden i can wind it out to 5+ easily and it shifts fine, also it still shifts pretty firm not like its a slipping clutch at all a few days ago i thought it was because it would shift hard down low and then not at all up high but now its fine all through except when it shifts itself at wot.. sorry for makin this so lengthy and probly repetative, but its late and this has been buggin me all day.. thanks for any help on this crazy trans (already savin to get it rebuilt but still would like to know whats goin on before i go through all that and still have issues later)
97LT1Z 12-07-2004, 02:38 PM My tranny was going through the same series of events for the past month or so...and then finally she was gone...i predict that you will definatley have to get it rebuilt....like I am right now
RacingTiger04 12-07-2004, 06:14 PM well its nice to know thats the problem at least, wierd how it goes through good and bad phases like that though but thats what im waitin on, is it to finally give out... and hopefully itll hang on another month so i can find somethin else to drive while the trans is out lol
Jay-Roll 12-08-2004, 01:13 AM Have you tried possibly getting the tranny flushed and maybe changed the filter. I had a similar problem of off and on days with shifting. Did a fluid/filter swap after it completely quit working on me one morning. Although it probably didn't fix the problem. I got about another year out of the tranny before it died.
RacingTiger04 12-08-2004, 03:52 PM im planning on doing that tonight, i meant to weeks ago but it kept gettin put back for flooding/work/school so tonight all systems dead set on flush/filter and shift kit just for the added lifespan (less clutch slipping between each gear) im hopin that will help it a lot because even in the manual for the package it says it can dramatically increase the remaining life of a trans showin signs of goin out .. just the earliest signs like mine is doing though, so im just lookin to get another few months out of it and go ahead and rebuild it
i dont wanna worry about it goin out on me later on down the road when i dont have the money on hand to do it :-p
Jay-Roll 12-08-2004, 06:56 PM Everything you mentioned is a good idea except the shift kit. Think of it this way. If your installing the kit for 2 reasons, #1 you want firmer shifts and #2 you want to lengthen the life of the tranny. Opt to wait on the firmer shifts and install the shift kit after the rebuild or tranny swap. No sense in wasting the kit on a tranny that might die on you tomorrow. Then you can lengthen the life of the NEW tranny, not your old dying one.
RacingTiger04 12-09-2004, 12:21 AM yeah but i see it like this, the shift plate doesnt get messed up, if i put the shift kit in thats less i have to do later on and itll prolong the life long enough that ill be SURE to have enough to get a good rebuild on my current one :)
