Gas gauge is stuck on full
Gas gauge is stuck on full
Got a 1993 Camaro with a gas gauge on the dash that stays on full. Would I need to run a diagnotic to see if it's at the dash, or at the tank? Also, I think that the fuel pump and the float are one unit for a '93, does anyone know?
Re: Gas gauge is stuck on full
You should be able to check the resistance of the sending unit. Don't know what the resistance spec is for "empty" and "full", but someone here should know. When mine died, it showed the tank "full" all the time.
The sending unit is riveted to the stock fuel pump support bracket. When my sending unit died, the performance shop claimed the only way to buy the sending unit was with the support bracket, which is big $$$. Since my support bracket had already been extensively modified for a Bosch in-tank pump, they drilled the rivets out of the new bracket and transferred the sending unit to the old bracket. Shop absorbed 1/2 the cost since they had modified the fuel system at about the same time the sending unit died.

Pre-written blurb for guage troubleshooting:
To help figure out what your fuel gauge problem is, locate the pump electrical connector on the rear of the floor pan under the car (by the fuel filter). It has purple, gray and black wires going to the fuel tank. Unplug the connector. With a meter, read resistance between the black and purple wires going to the tank.
approximate:
88 ohms = full
60 ohms = 3/4
43 ohms = 1/2
26 ohms = 1/4
1 ohm = empty
The readings should correspond to your gauge. If the reading(s) seem accurate to what you have in the tank, the sender is ok. If they don't, the sender or wiring has a problem.

Re: Gas gauge is stuck on full
mine does this once in a while, i'm guessing because I drive it only once a week or so, after everything gets warmed up and running again, the problem corrects itself.
