Tire situation, what should I do for winter or Snow tires?
Tire situation, what should I do for winter or Snow tires?
I didnt like the factory 235's Goodyears, they were awful
At 20,000 I changed to Dunlop 245-50 R16's and I really liked them, much improved handling in rain, ok in snow, looked better being 245's.
Now I'm at 40,000 miles and winter's coming up.
Normally I'd park the Camaro and drive either the Tahoe or Astro in the winter.... But my parents sold the Astro, and my 18yo sister doesnt have a car so she drives the Tahoe all the time, so it looks like I'm going to have to drive the Camaro this year
I did "ok" with new 245's in the snow, but I still got stuck, my current ones are a little more then 1/2 warn however they are still good IMO for a few more miles
I'm playing with Snow tires- Not rugged ones that look like they came off a truck, but something that will grip in.
I'm thinking about getting them mounted on the factory wheels- what size? rember I still have 245's on front.
Whats the chances of me finding 2 extra Camaro wheels? mine are the painted 5 spoke? I'd almost just take 2 salid shooters.
I'm just wondering if it's worth the money, and also the fact that my front dont have as much tread as they use to. I'll add weight if it gets bad, but I'm just trying to make the best out of what I got.

Re: Tire situation, what should I do for winter or Snow tires?
If you are going to drive your car in the snow, forget about wide tires. Your best is (4) snow tires with a narrow width. Thats what I used and that was still iffy in deep snow.
Re: Tire situation, what should I do for winter or Snow tires?
call up tire rack, drop the 400 for steel rims and blizzacks and be done with it. No more worries, no getting tires mounted/balanced before/after winter, just put them on and drive. Best money I ever spent

No LSD so I'm even worse offI was trying to just get 2 for the rear- and avoiding steel wheels (I have a pare, but would prefer to put them on the factory style wheels) just because they'll be on for atleast 3 months I guess.
Supose I just get two Blizzacks for the rear wheels- what size is the best? I dont know much about tire size- also do you put weight in the rear?
The idea of trying to drive this car in the snow makes me sick
Re: Tire situation, what should I do for winter or Snow tires?
Just two snows are not going to help you if you can not steer the car. Thats why every tire maker now recommends mounting four Snows. If you can't steer the car what good are the rears only??

Granted, not having an LSD huirts, and ugly steel rims look ghetto for 3-4 months, but I'd rather my car look ghetto with steel rims on it then be smashed into a guard rail or telephone pole.

Re: Tire situation, what should I do for winter or Snow tires?
I know the idea- 4 snow tires is best, I dont usually have trouble with stearing in the past, my idea going into this is just trying to get accelerating tracting which was always my bigest problem.
I'm going to sleep on it some more, I got about another month before I have to deal with this one so maybe I'll have a more perminante solution by then.

Another vote for Bridgestone Blizzaks - works for me. (I use 215/60-16's in winter)
But I probably won't be driving the Camaro much in the winter any more, since it now has a 383.

Problem solved
Bought 4 95 trans am wheels from a fellow bord member and they have Good Year Eagle TR tires on them 235/50/R16's look more all season then performance with alot of good tread left too.
They look like they'll do better because they have more cross hatches in the tread then any other tire I've tried and the tread is much deeper then mine ever were.
I'm going to give then a shot, If I dont like them I'll just get replacement snow tires put on those wheels.
