Looking for BIG power from a 396. Here is what I have ... what do I do now?

I am looking into buying a 96 Z28 with a 396. I want to put a turbo on it, and make BIG power!!! It is now making 400rwhp with the 396 and no port work on stock lt1 heads and just an lt4 HOT cam, so it seems to be making great power for such a mild but super strong setup. It is at about 12:1 now so I know I need to get different heads to drop the compression. What can I get away with buying in terms of heads and what do I need to know (other than tranny or rear end wise) to make big power? IE: 600rwhp-1000rwhp??

Thanks

Wow....to be honest i wouldnt even be thinking blower with this motor unless you were willing to really drop that compression alot. I mean heads would help but from the way it sounds like this motor was built I would put the bottle on this car in a heart beat, I would probably put in a healthier cam too.

Not to mention the stock unported heads...

Using the compression calc on this site. It looks like putting on a set of AFR's with 76cc chambers would bring the compression down to ~9.4:1 wich is about the best you could hope for without changing the pistons.

Thanks for the help! Realistically, if I were to get a remote mounted turbo and say a custom turbo cam with those heads, what type of numbers could I get from pump gas on a good tune?

Realistically what kind of budget are you working with? To make big power and still stay streetable you are going to have to spend a pretty penny.

I am putting into factor that I will already have the motor, which apparently cost about 8k to build. I am not taking into considerationg the tranny or rear end, as I am really just looking for numbers right now on the dyno. I don't really know what I am going to be spending - but I assume I would need 2k for the heads and 4k for a turbo setup and some cash to get it tuned. Anything else I am missing?

You are forgetting fuel system and suspension.

ok that makes sense. I'm sure I'd need a cage but I hate those things (haha). What kind of fuel system am I gonna need and how much would it cost? Also, anything I should look out for? Do I have any business even attempting this?

In all honesty it takes alot of time, dedication and money to get your car to run right. Don't expect to put your car together and instantly run 600 rwhp. There is alot of useful info out there if you do a search. Boost is addictive and I can tell you for a fact that you will end up spending more money that you initially anticipate. Trust me I know because I have been there.

Your best bet is to spray this set-up and go boodt down the road with a different set of pistons.

Everything else should work fine for the boosted application, but the compression should ideally be about 9:1.

Wow, where to start? With a budget, IMHO. It's hard to be at all specific without knowing what you are planning to spend. Most of the time a project like this ends up 2-2.5X what you originally thought it would!
