Just had oil change
Just had oil change
Hey guys, I just had an oil change and went for synthetic blend oil, on the sticker they say my next oil change isn't due for 150000 miles. Surely this can;'t be right? Is the synthetic blend oil worth the extra money?
Re: Just had oil change
15,000 mile?
That's excessive. 4-5,000 might be ok if filtration is good but I wouldn't want to push a synth-blend too far down the "extended change interval" ladder. Of course you could always have an oil analysis performed to see how the oil is performing at ~4000 miles. Just a thought.

Re: Just had oil change
I would say 150,000 was a misprint. Yes, synthetic is worth the extra money. If you don't like spending the extra money on synthetic, do the oil changes yourself. You'll spend more money doing an oil change with basic oil than buying the synthetic oil itself. Changing oil is not hard, you don't even need to lift the front end up sometimes
Re: Just had oil change
I use mobil 1 oil, & a mobil 1 filter, and I do oil changes every 3000-4000 miles whether it needs it or not. 15000 is crazy. The synthetic oil can stand more abuse, but a few WOT passes will foul up the oil more than just everyday average driving. I'd say don't go longer than 5000-6000 miles.

Re: Just had oil change
There's been a lot of debate on the subject, so it'll be IMPOSSIBLE to get actual facts. For example, IN MY OPINION, you can go at least 5K on it. Think about it. Just regular oil is suppposed to be good for 5K now. The only reason the 3K mark is still advertised is because the oil company makes more money. Think about it. You think they'd want everyone to go 15K miles if they could get 3X as much $$$? Hell no.
So yeah, the only way to really know is run her up to 5K, get it tested. Then if you can, run it to 7K, get it tested. Keep seeing how it does. I'm sure it'll be fine all the way up to 10K at least.
Good luck

It's not impossible. Just use oil analysis (as you said yourself) www.blackstone-labs.com It's the only way to get scientific results.

I believed the oil change light is only counting down miles every reset and its not a sensor!
so GM set that light for any normal oil not for synthetic..

Re: Just had oil change
Actually, our engines from what I have seen had synthetic in them from the factory but its not advertised that way.. When I changed all the fluids in my car at 13K miles they were all syn..
In any case, the sensor turns on at differnt times.. At least for me it has..
Waiting for the next activity.

Re: Just had oil change
I use Mobil 1 all the time from the first day i had it. I also change every 2500 - 3000 miles...if you race your car, or even have fun with it, its best to change early, it will give your engine a longer life...unless your looking to blow it up for an excuse to put in SLP's new 402 Shortblock! :-)
