K&N CAI 4 LT1 Question

When I see people's K&N cold air induction system, it looks like two metal pipes that go from the MAF to under the car. But, when I go to K&N's website, or to www.thunderracing.com, their FIPK just looks like a little black 'L' shaped piece of plastic with a filter on the end of it. What do I need?

I want shiny pipes!

Sounds like you may be looking at pictures of the SLP CAI... two metal pipes. The GMPP intake is similar.

I dont know if K&N makes the "shiny" pipes you are looking for, but SLP does, but it will cost you.

Re: K&N CAI 4 LT1 Question

i would stay away from slp since the metal could hold heat in more=less performance
probably negligible and the added weight of it is negligible also but...
yea, the k/n is just a plastic piece of tube
the filter is supposed to flow 700 cfm, while the tubing can flow 1300 or so cfm
that's why you see some guys (eventually) replacing the filter with a different one (which some need modified work to the splash guard, etc.)

The SLP unit doesn't hold in any more heat, and looks 100 times better than the plastic K&N setup. The prices should be about the same, so if you like the look of the SLP, go for it. I'm glad I did.

you sure about the heat thing?
once again, i say it's very negligible unless you're looking at every last ounce of power, but wouldn't the metal tend to hold the heat in more than the plastic?
just curious

Re: K&N CAI 4 LT1 Question

Its not a matter of "holding in heat". Its a matter of the thermal conductivity of the plastic vs. the thermal conductivity of the metal, and which one allows the heat from the engine compartment to flow through it into the moving air on the other side. In general, I would think that the metal has a higher thermal conductivity than the plastic, but you also have to take the relative thickness of each material into consideration. Put a little insulation around either of them, and they will not heat the air much at all.

The front of my motor doesn't get real hot. Actually not hot at all. Feel free to come over and feel the SLP unit if you like. Basically there's no difference between any of the CAI kits (aside from the G2), so get whatever you think looks the best.

Re: K&N CAI 4 LT1 Question

Where is a good (read: cheap) place to get a complete SLP CAI kit? Post linky, please.

$209

I got mine at:

You might be able to find it a little cheaper, but probably not much. Plus their service and shipping was fast. I think I had it within a couple days.

Re: K&N CAI 4 LT1 Question

I got mine at Thunder Racing (though they didn't have it listed on their website) because I had to get plug wires at the same time. It was about $10 cheaper anyway.

Looks like I'll have to be changing my sig! No longer "Bone Stock!"
