Need Help Figuring Out Which Gears I Have

I have a 96 Z28 6SPD and I was wanting some help with figuring out what gears and what series carrier is on my car. What codes should I look for? The reason I wanted to know is I'm probaly going to upgarde to some 3.73's on the near future. Thanks in advance.

With the Z28 I would say that you have the 3.23 gear in there with a 3 series carrier. That is what my T/A came equipped with from the factory. That code is GU5 and can be found on the option label on your door. Try http://www.eskimo.com/~cjessup/ckjz28oc.htm This is where I deciphered my option codes.

Well he says he has a 1996 6-speed, so that means he has the 3-series 3.42 rear gears. All 6-speeds 94-02 have 3-carrier 3.42 gears stock. BTW, dont waste your time with 3.73's with the T-56, get 4.10/4.11's. You will hardly notice 3.73's from 3.42 in a T-56. 4.10's are definitely the gear for T56. RPM's won't be much higher, and you will actually be able to go into 6th before 60 mph.
For example, 60 in 3.42 is same RPM as 50 with 4.10's.

Go 4.10's, so that you won't be disappointed. ;)

i reccommend 4.11s
they are stronger and the gears are what tend to break in the rear from what i've heard
the 4.11s are 9 pinion 37 ring as opposed to the weaker 10 pinion 41 ring

Will the 4.11's be a setback once you get up in speed? I have a few friends who like to race from a roll, my 3.42's seem to do decent, but I want something that will wake the car up off the line and not be so bad up top.

well, if you get higher numerical gears, you're supposed to accelerate faster in every gear
so basically, if you drag, you might have to shift to 5th (can't remember if you do or not)
it will be fine though from what i've heard
they are supposed to be the "ideal" (subjective) gears for an m6:)

4:11's are best when racing from a stop, or drag racing. Your car will accelerate much quicker off the line with 4:11's, big SOTP difference too. I gained about 3/10's in my 1/4 mile times switching to them. The car wont pull as hard on the top end though, like going from 80 - 120, thats where the 3:42's will pull better. If you want the best of both worlds maybe go to 3:73's. 95% of the time your accelerating from a stop in everyday driving, how often do you really race up to 100+? I don't get into "top end" races on the street (well very rarely :) ) so I'm not concerned about it not pulling hard in that area.

Well I have a couple of nice stretches of freeway by my house where my friends and I sometimes do punches from 60-110 or so...I'll probably go with 4.11's, since the majority is stop-light to stop-light anyway.
