355 or 383 for a FI setup?

Besides the obvious differences of having more CI and low end torque of a 383... Is there anything advantageous of a 355 over a 383? Since the 383 is stroked its piston speed is higher which means more wear on the rings correct? Are there any clearencing involved in a 383 setup that would cost more for labor? All thoughts appreciated...

The 383 will require the block to be clearanced, so yes there will be more labor. Also given all things equal except the stroke diff between the 355 & 383, the compression will be higher on the 383.

I'm going to go with a 355 for my buildup.

Like the old saying goes, there is no replacement for displacement :)

You're saying that in the wrong forum. ;)

Sure there is, its called more BOOST! :)

:D You know this. If anyone has little displacement, it's me and I'm making decent #'s so far with my first round of tuning. Once fuel system gets straightened out car will be re-tuned.

boost = :)
stroker + boost = :D
stroker + boost + nitrous = :metal:

It's your choice.

So there are some clearancing involved in a 383... SO if i had a professional build a 383 for a LT1 versus a 355, what would the cost differences be? Would it be that marginal to opt for a 355 and compensate with 1-2lbs more boost?

There is no significant difference in cost (assuming a new rotating assy in both cases) between a 355 and a 383 build up. Maybe $100 in addtional work on the block.

I know this question is geting of the topic a little... but do you always need a new oilpan to clear the crank on a 383 built-up?

thanks!

No. Most setups use the stock oilpan.

Stock pan that has been modified..AKA beat the living F%CK out of it with a hammer :) j/k

Depending on what rotating assembly you use will decide on how well the stock pan fits.. Sometimes no clearancing at all is needed.. Other times you need to just ta pthe pan here and there :)

My 396 didn't clean my -Canton- pan and we had to dimple it.

If I had it to do all over again, I'd stick with a 355 and spend the extra money elsewhere.

In theory its not that much more money, but its like anything else: sticking with the more common parts gives you better selection and lower price points.

LMAO!!

We should put toguether a "repair" or "high performance" garage! We would be building some killer machines!
