I get to thinking. Boy those G-bodies were popular cars for GM. They were the definitions of personal luxury coupes: sharp looking, roomy, comfortable, rode and drove nice and most importantly they were RWD and V8 powered. No, this '87 Monte Carlo doesn't "go like stink" compared to other cars of today, and even for their day they weren't the fastest cars around but they had that panache of having a small, capable V8. Best of all, these cars didn't infringe on the Camaro because even though both were RWD V8 coupes you could easily see and feel the differences in them. With the future of Monte Carlo up in the air, I'm wondering if there would be a place for a Monte Carlo on Zeta, with a 5.3 V8 in the SS model and base models with V6's. I think today's Monte could be even MORE popular in this configuration.

I can't begin to tell you how many times I've thought the same thing! I believe your spot on. My folks for example had (in some ways still have... but thats another story) a 1987 Monte SS Aerocoupe. It was perfect for our family. My folks (before kids) always had f-bodies and the occasional truck but once my brother and I arrived on the scene they needed something more kid freindly. We suffered through the caprice and the bonneville until they decided on that car. Brand new and special ordered I can still smell it to this day and I still remember my Prom 11 years ago in it
.
Point is this... alot of guys out there, me included (now that I have kids) need a little bigger car but want everything that goes into a sportscar with it even if it's a detuned version.
For this very reason alone I plan on purchasing a GTO in the next year or so but ohhh how I would love a monte with a V8! and RWD!

Today's Monte has a decent profile, heck it would probably put a whooping on that old 305 4 barrel, but it just isn't the same.

However... there does seem to be a bit of a twist that some here may find a bit unpleasant.
(clue: What are all the other NASCAR bodies based on?)

Dont see why they cant just make the thing two door and rwd. It'd be the same situation that Ford had with the Mustang and the MN12 Thunderbird/Cougar - neither stepped on each othere's toes but they both sold well (although the MN12 seemed to take the road to extinction that the fbody did - no updates, no advertisment).

I'm looking for a late '70's/80's A or G body, myself.....something I can take the whole family to cruise night in. Maybe a '78 to '81 Malibu two door. Or a Monte Carlo SS....like your uncles. Or maybe a Regal T-Type (more stealthy than a GN). My good friend got a '79 Hurst/Olds.....brand new, when he was a senior in HS. We spent lots of nights cruising in that one....I wouldn't mind finding a decent one of those....for old times sake.
