I was hoping to build a 383 9:1 compression with a specific turbo cam and then add the turbo later. I hear that running the car without the turbo it will run bad or very unresponsive. Is that true?

True or false about a engine built for a Turboericcer 07-26-2004, 04:32 PM I was hoping to build a 383 9:1 compression with a specific turbo cam and then add the turbo later. Is that true? 5.0THIS 07-26-2004, 05:03 PM I know a couple of people driving around with turbo motors with no turbos..... the cam in a turbo is fairly mild in nature, when it comes to LSA, and the only other factor would be comp. ratio. I dont see the motor being optomized, but I dont see it running especially bad around town  Josh-'04 GTO 07-26-2004, 05:21 PM Yeah, it should drive around very similar to stock. ericcer 07-26-2004, 07:14 PM One of the guys at Cam Motion thought it would run like do-do. They gave me these specs for my build up. Duration (intake/exaust) 231/226 Lift (intake/exaust) 564/556 Lobe Center Separation 115 Intake Centerline 113 engineermike 07-27-2004, 06:08 PM I built a supercharger motor once and ran it for a while with no blower. It was an 8.4/1 compression 355, but it ran 11.96 at 114 all motor on poo gas. I'm not quite sure why people insist on using and obeying Cam Motion's recommendations. You really ought to see their shop. They have no R&D equipment at all. No spin-master. No dyno. Their cam-doctor is on a temperary fold-up table. Sure, some Pro-Stock guys use them, but the Pro-Stockers design their own cams and just get Cam Motion to manufacture it. They really aren't nearly as advanced as Comp or even Crane. Mike Brady 07-27-2004, 06:46 PM Terry at Cam Motion told me they grind one off cams for the companies you mentioned.. Cam Motion is also in the winners circle after most races, that's why I went with them. Cam Motion is also in the winners circle after most races, that's why I went with them. I'm sure that an employee of Cam Motion would tell you whatever it takes to get you to buy from them. That statement would mean much more if it came from a third party that is in the know. In addition, if they didn't do the R&D, then they are not truly in touch with the technology involved. Cams...they're not just "bumpsticks" anymore! :) ericcer 07-27-2004, 07:17 PM I built a supercharger motor once and ran it for a while with no blower. Mike I noticed that here people thought they were good. Is there a concern about quality or something? Just because the company is not big doesn't mean they aren't knowledgable. Who else do you recommend for a custom grind? engineermike 07-27-2004, 07:21 PM Terry also told me that 224 at .050" with .378" lobe lift is impossible (Comp lobe #3192). They grind one-off cams for local engine shops also. The local shop will typically send them a grind they know works, but is damaged, and Cam Motion will copy it. Mike engineermike 07-27-2004, 07:49 PM Is there a concern about quality or something? Just because the company is not big doesn't mean they aren't knowledgable. Who else do you recommend for a custom grind? Since they are small, they don't have access to the technology and tools it takes to make the latest and greatest cam grinds. To get a great custom grind, you have to go to an engine builder who is an expert in his field. Thunder Racing has had dozens, if not hundreds of different LS1 cams on the dyno. For a NA LS1 cam, go to Thunder. Duttweiller has had hundreds of turbo cams on the dyno. For a turbo cam, go to Duttweiller. It will cost extra, but you're paying for their R&D/dyno time. And speaking of Thunder, they are located about 15 miles from Cam Motion. Who grinds Thunder's cams? Not Cam Motion. Mike | ||
