Did my best.

Don't think I've ever really seen a situation like that before.

MG did you notice he did not have the guide plates?

I believe even with the self alighning rockers you need at least the stock plates? Not the big issue but jumps out at me.Other then that I think you covered it.

I have had the rockers hit the edge of the retainer but not the top

I've seen reconditioned valves get the tips re-ground but not so much that it would cause clearance problems like in his photos...if it were me, I'd probably get depressed and then go out and pull the heads and change out the valves.

I can say one thing for sure, that 2.20/160 valve pair is going have trouble
fitting in the chamber!

If the heads are still off the motor, I would suggest replacing the valve.
There are some pro-shops that sell individual valves. Maybe he'd get lucky
finding a match for his set?

Take your RR's to a machine shop.On the underside in the radius right in front of the trunion, have them use a end mill of the same dia. as your valve retainers.Cut a recess in the rockers (all) just deep enough for the retainer's to clear. If one is doing it they are all close.
You didn't say how many miles on the head.It appears that if a recent valve job was done that the/that valve is sunk a little deeper than the rest.If no valve job recently,I would pull the head and check that seat.It may be loose and pounding into the casting

Ellis,
Dunno. I never use self aligning so whether or not to use a guideplate with them has never really crossed my mind. I don't see why it'd hurt though do you?

I'm not a big fan of cutting the rocker. Guess you could do it with a cutter ground with a radius on it but I wouldn't want a sharp 90º in that area. Good place for a crack to start.

But then again, what's really going on there (rocker to retainer)?? It's hard to see from the pics just what the problem might be in that area.

Dan, is there any way you can take a picture of the complete setup? Rocker, retainer, lock and spring?? Need plenty of light in the picture to see what's going on too.

The beehive spring idea is also a nice one.... but that's also a pricey option. An inexpensive fix (if possible) may be the best.

MG,
If they didn't index the depth when they installed the valve's or they opened the seats for larger valves and didn't index them, the retainers are sitting a LOT higher than normal. As evidenced by the pulled threads on the stud and the amount of shims under that valve. This type of work should be done on a Serdi machine.
If it is done right and the min. taken off to clear the retainer,it wont hurt the RR'S.I agree it is not the best, but I have had to do it before. And it should be heavily radiused and blended in.

Good points LR!

You're more observent than I am sir. Didn't even notice the bad threads til I looked em over again.

Hopefully Dan will get back with us with more info.

I ran across this problem and I switched to a different retainer from Comp. I'll have to go look up the part number but it fixed my issue. :)

Posted a reply in order to be somewhat more specific on the setup in the original thread.

(Btw. That's a topic title I never thought I'd see in advanced tech  )
