Can I siphon out my ATF from the dipstick tube?

I was planning on dropping the pan and replacing the filter. I was wondering if i use a siphon pump if i could remove any of the fluid and eliminate the big mess that follows when i drop the pan? Do i risk damaging anything in the trans by sucking it out, if i can?

I don't see why not to atleast get the majority out, or you can put plastic on the ground because you have to drop the pan anyway.
