distributor tunning question!

those who have tunned their cars via computer. if you did all your tunning at a set degree of timing and then somehow magically forgot to tighten down the distributor so it worked its way off would you have to completely retune the car or could you just put the distributor back at the suggested timing you started tunning with?

was going over everything yesterday to figure out what my problems were and one could literally blow on the cap to turn it. called the tunner and he said that he would completely have to redo it now which isn't going to happen.

Jeff, no way in hell you'd have to re-tune the cars chip if the distributor moved. The chip has a base spark advance setting usually set to 6 or 8 or 10 degrees depending on how far the tuner wanted to go for initial. The Distributor is literally just the "carrier" for that setting. If its at 4* and the chip is set to 8*, move it back to 8* and its back to normal. I have no doubt about this at all. The computer does not "learn" your base spark advnace setting. Someone has to type it in an editor program and burn the chip that way with it set to that degree.

If it was loose during the tuning sessions, that could cause a problem. If it was tight during tuning but has slipped since then, just set it back to where it was and you'll be fine.

possability it was loose......it's rather messed up now. i set it to the time the tuner said it was and it won't start. i go from 4 to 12* and it runs but still backfires.
