2005 GTO changes

Well we know the '05 GTO will be getting hood scoops and Quad exhust, what other changes are planned?

What is the latest word on the LS2?

That's all I know of right now.

Last I heard the LS2 comes in January.

Recessed grill hopefully. Looks really good.

On a side note, I saw my first GTO on the street yesterday and I was able to pick it out about half a mile away. I didnt confuse it with a Grand Am/Prix for a second, maybe it's just me though.

Well, the only thing they've known for a while is that there are multiple test mule monaros with LS2s in them parading around australia stomping grounds. As far as being in 2005 everyone was split down the middle. We had the first camp (I was kind of in this one) where people thought since the corvette has always had new engines first. L98, LT1, LS1, LS6. It would be the most likely candidate for the first ls2 run. Then there are those who think it will just be a 400hp tire smoking ls2 in it (which I also think has a good chance.) As far as hood scoops/spoiler hopefully they are optional... just in case. :)

I would imagine..........GM isn't likely to start a pissing match involving the Corvette.

I dont think so. The current GTO has the same hp rating as the base vette.

With the GTO's size, suspension and tires, theres no way it will come close to being a threat to the Vette.

Good point. I drove the new GTO at GM's Auto Show in Motion when they were here in Tampa recently and I thought it handled very well compared to my Z-28. It could use a little more tire, but even then, I doubt it'll be a serious threat to a C6 in the twisties.

Also, by all accounts the LS2 that's in the C6 vette its first year is well underrated at 400hp. Which means that all GM need to do to deal with "image" issues is bump up the official rating on the 'Vette to make everyone happy.

The whole pissing contest thing with the vette doesnt really matter. The Monaro is made in a different land, and there is no Vette to fight with, so remember that. If the Monaro gets the Gen IV motor, you bet that the LS2 will come to the GTO.
If the GTO doesnt get the LS2, chances are that they will use up left over LS6 heads and cams and make a small percentage of GTO's into a performance model. Out of the 18k a year, you will probably see like 3-4k of them with LS6 heads and cam.
And the LS2 is right now rated at 400hp so not to upset the Z06 owners right now. The LS2 has more cubes, higher CR, better flowing heads, larger cam, better flowing intake and exhaust, and better engine managment... no way its only got 400hp. This is the same engine that was in the SS concept car and I think that the HP is more along the number of 420ish. The GTO still wont get that matching performance number, but a "389" hp LS2 has a nice ring to it. :D

For some reason I am thinking the GTO will have to wait till the C6 Z05 comes out to get the LS2. But a few other things effect the timing like LS1 production capacity, LS2 Production capacity, and the logictics of getting the LS2 to OZ. I know the engine is basically ready to go in the GTO...it is just a matter of getting the LS2 in production, getting it Austrailia, and getting the Corvette politics out the way.

Just you. I came up on a Grand AM the other day. It wasn't until I saw GTO on the back that I realized what it was. I was even looking for a GTO!

Actually I like the GTO, thus I've been looking for one on the street. Looks like a Grand Am to me :confused: That's just my opinion. If you're going to bash me for my opinion you might as well bash me for thinking the C6 looks like a Viper too.

I think the same about you sometimes too :D BTW, it's just my OPINION that they do look a like. You probably think the 1968 Mustang looks like a 2005 Mustang too. Maybe we're both blind? LOL

Now, Ive seen the GTO in almost every single color, and I have yet to see the resemblance OTHER THEN the twin port grill, and horizontal lights.
Outside of that, I dont see anything that the Grand am and GTO look like. I can see the C6/Viper comparision, but not the GTO/Grans Am. Sorry, but your opinion is more based on what you have heard from your ford buds then your own opinion.

I see a lot of ignorance from the GM guys too, I can throw mud too if you like. I've owned many brands, GM included. You're just as ignorant and biased as anyone else. Hell, even some of the GM guys thinks it looks like a Grand Am. Read some of the old threads.

does this GM person own a 4th gen fbody? I find they are just as abrasive when it comes to the GTO as the Mustang guys. Being biased would have me saying something else. I just honestly dont see the grand am look in the GTO.

I admit my GM bias, will you admit your ford bias? I also admit i like the looks of the new mustang. Even though it is retro, it looks great! As for the GTO, it looks like a grand am the way a grand prix looks like a grand am. There are major similarities between all pontiacs! It fits in the pontiac lineup perfectly. I'm sorry, but there is something wrong if you can't tell them apart.

The people that say GTO looks like a Grand Am are just pissed because the GTO doesn't look like a WS6. I have also heard GM and Ford people compare it to the Aztek too, I don't think I need to tell you how crazy that is. The car that the GTO looks like the most is the BMW 3 series coupe, but you won't here GTO haters say that, that would be a complement since the BMW is a respected car, they would rather put it down by saying it looks like the Grand Am which is a lesser car, even though they look nothing a like other than the trademark Pontiac split grill.

I definitely lean toward Ford, but only because they've made cars I like. However, when it came time to retire my F-150, I didn't get another Mustang (which I considered). I got a 2002 Subaru WRX. Why? Because the WRX is a nicer car IMHO than the 2002 Mustang. It had a lot of bang for the buck. I knew it wasn't as fast (but pretty close). I had never owned a turbo or AWD car before and wanted to try it out. So, while I lean toward Ford, I'm not so biased that I won't buy another brand. I didn't consider GM because they didn't have anything in 2002 that I liked other than the Vette. Now, they have the GTO and are coming out with a few other nice cars. I like the GTO, but wouldn't buy one because it has no trunk and is really heavy.

I never said the GTO looked EXACTLY like a Grand Am. They're similar just like you said. I can tell them apart, but the GTO just didn't stick out enough for me to tell them apart until I came up on the car and saw GTO on the back. That's when I realized it was a GTO. I was going to talk to the guy to see what he thought about it, but he turned off before I could :( He lives in my neighborhood so I'll get another shot to talk to him. I like the way the GTO looks, but I think the back fender is a little plain. The new changes should make it stand out a little more :cool:

No one here is going to accuse me of being a GTO hater by a long shot, so take this for what it's worth: Keep some perspective here.

Not everyone is good at telling cars apart. I have no problem telling a GTO apart from a Grand Am, and neither does alot of people. However, some people do. Some people (alot actually) have problems telling a Camaro from a Firebird, a Firebird from a Probe when more than 75 feet away (I've made that mistake myself), or a Firebird from a Corvette from a block away without the rear visible.

It doesn't bother me , and I don't take issue with people who say GTO is kind of plain (perfect stealth car :D).

As long as someone doesn't damn the whole car (or come up with really retarted or made up excuses to slam it) simply because they don't like the styling, or start rewriting GTO history, or start whining about some GTO "look" (beyond a hoodscoop) that doesn't and never existed, let opinions be opinions! :D

Tell me about it...my wife and I bought an altima in '02 for the same reason.

I actually like the 2002+ Altima's. They even have decent power.

That Subaru you bought is technically 20% GM vehicle since that is how much of Subaru GM owns. ;)

Yeah, I knew about that. I have nothing against GM. In fact, the turbos that Subaru uses are Mitsubishi turbos.
