Cam question for Blown Stroker Application

Did any of you run into any problems with the rods interferring with the base circle of your cam? I've never read anything saying they had that problem, but the guy at Indy Cylinder Head said sometimes it is an issue. I will be using a Lunati Forged crank, 6" Lunati H-Beam Rods, Forger Lunati pistons, and a Lunati cam. Speaking of cams does anyone else use a Lunati cam in a similar application, and if so what one (specs)? Thanks in advance for your help!

When you run a long stroke crankshaft and aftermarket rods that are beefier than stock, chances are they will come very close to the cam lobes and can sometimes hit. You can relieve some metal off the sides of the rods or go with a smaller base circle cam for more clearance.

On the camshaft you are going to want less overlap than a N/A engine. This means an LSA of 114-116 would be optimal rather than your usual 110 or 112, to prevent blowing your boosted air charge out the exhaust valves.

Thanks! I heard that on hydraulic roller applications you can't use a smaller base circle cam. Really what I need to know is when you all built your engines if you did have to modify (grind) the big end of the rod because of interference.

The base circle won't interfere. There are certain LOBES that MAY interfere with the rods near the rod bolt heads depending on your exact combination of cam and rods. My experience is with 383s (3.75" stroke). If you have a lot more stroke you might have interferece with the base circle, but I haven't heard of it.
