Raced a Z-R1 Vette, Damn!!!!!

I'm drivin around at 1 in the morning, and I come up on a 90's vette, had the Z-R1 badge on the back. I pull up to him at the next light, and roll down the window. We start to talk, and he claims it is the real deal. He told me the motor was a 350 DOCH with 4 valves per cyliner and that he had a few things like headers done to it, he guessed it had 450hp. We are the only two cars on the road and decide to go for it when the light turns. I knew I was screwed. He starts revving, and its so loud it shakes my camaro. I got a near perfect launch, just a slight chirp and my car hooks. He also launched hard, and alread put a car lenght on me by 40. I kept pressing on to 110, and he had me by at least 6 car lenghts. I gave up after about 115, and he kept the hammer down and drove off into the night.
DAMN, i want a Z-R1!!!!

Did the same thing against an LT4 vette back with my 98 T/A. It was bad......

Good death.

ZR1s are no joke. Modded they are scary. I would have faired better with my Z06 cam/intake/Predator combo. But would have still lost I'm sure. I think I am faster than a stock one though.

I knew a guy one time that had one and his tag said...
YESITIS because everyone would always ask him.

Nasty fast rides.

Good run regardless.

ZR-1's aren't that fast. I was taking them out with my near stock 305 so you shouldn't have any problems with them. Maybe he had nitrous or something?

Do you know what the ZR1 is? He could probably tow your 305 Camaro down the 1/4 mile and still beat the time you can run in your own car by yourself!

While this guy's post is a little out to lunch, I'm pretty sure a new Z06 is a good deal faster than a stock ZR-1. IIRC, a regular C5 and ZR-1 are about equal in quarter mile acceleration. Anyone care to support or refute this opinion?

Stock they'll run low 13s around 110 mph. The key is they're top end monsters, especially once modded. That's one hell of a motor.

Mikie
02-14-2004, 05:59 PM
Exactly ,

The ZR-1 is a low 13sec ride and may even tip high 12s. The New Z06 is a touch faster. Although I think the stock 305 owns them both:rolleyes:

Marc85Z has got to be writing that sarcastically:D

02-14-2004, 08:25 PM
Yeah, I think a new Z06 is about 2 to 4 tenths and 3 mph faster than the fastest ZR1s. The ZR1 does about 180 mph and the Z06 does about 170 mph.

GreenDemon
02-14-2004, 09:37 PM
Yes they're definitely top end monsters, a little slow off the line though, a stock C5 could probably take one at a light for a little while at least, but not at speed.

It makes you wonder why they named it the LT5, it has nothing in common with the LT1/4 other than cubes. Super-torque vs. super-hp. - Although I wouldn't mind my LT1 having stuff in common with the LT5. Nice engine.

I'm sure with a heads/cam combo you could give him a run for his money, but from a roll you'd probably feel the same way I would next to an LS1...:D

The only thing that sucks is not many know how to work on the LT5 and replacement parts a becoming very scarce and expensive. That is why I did not get the clean 1990 Zr1 with low miles and got my Z. Just thinking ahead.

Deep inside though I am kicking myself in the a$$.

yeah i saw this magazine article a while back where they put a z06 against a zr1 and the z06 was about 2-3 tenths faster. then they did a top end race and the zr1 raped that z06. nice cars , but i like the zr1's more. dont remember what magazine it was but i'm pretty sure i saw it on the net.

My point is the guy was saying with a stock 305 he could outrun a ZR1 Vette and that's BS.

I raced one a couple years ago......a mid 90's model....we were at Great Lakes Dragway.....the ZR1 was somthing to look at....I was lucky enough to line up against him....I won by about a tenth but he traped 111mph vs my 108 that night....it was sooooo close! Another 50' and he would have gotten the green light....the ZR1 is prolly the BADDEST Vette ever made.

350Z

...I definaly don't pick on ZR1's of any kind.....awesome cars

you think he was serious about that dohc set up?

that would be bad as hell,

i bet there would be about 15 grand in that motor if he had done a dohc setup. but i would be upset if i only got 450 hp out of it.

still a badass vette to walk an ls1 like that.

TQdrivenws6
02-15-2004, 11:53 PM
No offense to ya, but the ZR1 came with a DOHC 350. Ten years ago there were putting the 405hp number out that today's Z06 is claiming. The new Z06 is lighter , and making the power from an OHV 350, I want to see them do a DOHC 350 now....

GreenDemon
02-16-2004, 02:53 AM
Yeah no kidding, the LT5 came with four camshafts on top, not to mention it wasn't even a GM engine- I forgot the name of the company that produced them for GM, although I'm sure someone around here does.

I'm sure you could get lots of power out of those things, and I'm also sure that it is in no way cheap, a rare top of the line engine will do that I guess...

I think it was a lotus motor.

02-16-2004, 09:07 AM
Actually, I think it was a Mercury Marine building them......

I believe the motor is a GM motor but was built and designed by a Lotus design team that GM hired. Maybe wrong but regardless who built it......that motor is still the motor to beat

Exactly!

The best ET I ever heard of from a stock LT5 was 12.3 or so. Very close to the new ZO6 cars, only 10 years ahead of time! With some mods they are downright scary. Lingenfelter has a near 600 horse NA LT5 package!!!

I was gonna say that but you beat me to it. As already said the ZR1's arent that fast stock, but they do trap a good mph, kinda like a viper that runs 12's but traps 120 or so. The Z06 is faster because GM caught some flack off the ZR1 guys because the ZR1 WAS the fastest vette, I think I read that in Car Craft or Chevy hiperformance. Did anyone see the Zr1's on on the racingfreaks website? They'd run 170mph + on the highways in town. Those guys are stupid or nuts, I don't know which. Yeah its insane, but not a good idea. Damn I'm getting older, BLAAHHHH.

Mike 92LX

ZR1s are weird. Some are fast-other aren't. I have seen 1990 375HP ones running high 12s and the newer ones with the same driver run 13.3s.
They are very fast regardless-with BS mods they can really fly-12.0s at 120MPH with gears, headers, ram air, prom and degreed cams are easy. For 1/4 mile they are undergeared-remember they can rev and you barely get in third if you shortshift in the 1/4. Z06 rules in the 1/4 mile because of lighter wieght and much better gearing.
Own a Zr1 with an LPE heads and cam package and you are in the 10s on pump gas with a stick.
