what is a better all around suspension modification, subframe connectors or a torque arm?

Both are good mods. I would recommend going with the subframe connectors (SFC) to tie the front and rear subframes of the car together. It strengthens the body and makes a noticeable difference in the ride and prevents many squeeks, creaks, and groans from the body. An aftermarket torque arm is great when you are looking to get the maximum weight transfer for more traction. When you strart going to the track and running slicks it becomes more of a necessity.

I would say that SFC's are a better all around mod.

I would have to go with SFC's also, from there you can build up your suspension & make vast improvements in your cars handling abilities

Definitely install SFC first. They will greatly increase the rigidity of your car's body.
