Condition of LS1 on ebay...wondering if I should go for it?

Condition:

looks great on outside and inside, some chips on hood, and scuff on rear bumper cover, nothing bad looks great as is. Interior shows very little if any wear, looks like a 50k mile car. Service engine light comes on intermitantly due to a fualty EGR valve which is easy to repair and have seen them on ebay fairly inexpensively. Has a bearing noise while driving, possibly from the pinion or rear wheel, not real bad, wouldn't hesitate to drive the car anywhere.

Does any of that sound major? I'm obviously going to look into it more before I decide to go through w/ it, but I just want to check if any of this makes it not worth even pursuing...

It would depend on how much the guy is selling it for..
obviously it's a 98,99 or 2000 ... he SHOULD take some money off the car for having the problems he describes.. check what similar cars are going for on ebay, and check the blue book value.. see if it's resonable.

as far as appearance goes.. as long as YOU like it..

the other problems.. i don't know.. i'll let someone else reply with that

On my '98, there was an EGR factory recall.
Lots of EGRs out there from folks doing the LS6 intake swap.

Bearing noise might be significant. However, whole rear diffs can be had for $2-300

Exclamation

Well... If the EGR valve is "easy to repair and have seen them on ebay fairly inexpensively" one could, and should, wonder why he hasn't taken car of it himself.

One less item to worry about in selling it, you know.

What if the SES light doesn't go away after replacing the EGR?

Bearing noise? Rear end noise? Uhhuh... :blah:

If the price is very reasonable and you have the means of taking care of the disclosed issues, and what ever else comes after that, it might turn out to be a good deal after all.

Be careful, though.

i would ask the guy exactly how he knows it's the egr valve... ask him for the exact code it threw, then look it up and see if it is the egr valve. if he can't give you a code, then i'd be suspicious, how could he know it was the egr valve w/o a code??? hmmm...

and a 'bearing noise'? that's a pretty vague description. i wouldn't mess with this car, but that's just me...

good luck, whatever decision you make...

Sounds sketchy to me, but what year is it, how many miles, a4 or m6, SS or z28?

yeah, we read that. the SES light could mean a million different things. how did the seller narrow it down to the egr valve, or did he just pull it out of his ***.... that was my point.

he probably PULLED THE CODE.

the code still stays in the computer, even when the light goes off.

Its a '99 Z28 manual with 213K miles I'm kind of looking for a beater, but if it has anything seriously wrong with it, then I'm not going to bother. But if its something I can fix on my own or with $200 or $300 or so, then why not.

"PROBABLY", exactly... why are you going to trust some goon on ebay that he "probably" pulled the code. you're STILL missing my point. i'm not arguing that the code stays in the PCM even after light is off. I AM arguing that i wouldn't trust this guy at all to diagnose a code he "probably" pulled.

if he did pull the code, he should be able to supply it quickly to a prospective buyer who requests it. he also ought to be able to supply the name of the device used to pull the code, or the specific dealer who pulled it. if he can't supply any of the above, beware....

I don't see why if you don't trust him... that you'd trust him if he told you HOW he got the code. If he was lying about the code, what's to say he's not lying about how he got the code?

Look, not everybody in the world is evil, cold-hearted, and trying to scam everyone else.

The guy said the car has 213k miles.. If he was trying to lie, he would have said it had less. He would have never mentioned a code.. and he would have never even said there were any problems with the car.

if you'd actually read my posts, it would help. listen, all i'm suggesting is a quick check on the guy to see if anything seems fishy. ask him for the exact code, in code form, NOT just saying EGR. if he can't supply the code: fishy. ask him how he obtained the code. if he says a hypertech gave him the code, we all know that's BS. if he says a specific dealer gave him the code, call the dealer and confirm. if they can't confirm: fishy.

on ebay, i tend to look for anything fishy about items or sellers. if anything doesn't add up, i don't buy.

i may not trust him about how he got the code, but i can sure as hell tell a fishy answer from a legitimate answer.

if he knows the code was an egr code, then he sure as hell better be able to supply it quickly, with a legitimate method of obtaining the code.
