Rebuilding T56???

Anyone here rebuild their own T56? Putting in a Street Twin in the coming week or 2 and my T56 can use some freshening up. I'd like to go to a steel fork and possibly the beefier input or output shaft since i'm running 150 shot of nitrous. Need some syncros too. Anyway, just wondering if any of you rebuilt yours and how involved it would be. I have the factory shop manuals also, but haven't looked at them yet to see how envolved it is. Thanks.

Its not that hard, you will need

- Small lock ring pliers
- Large lock ring pliers
- Bearing press
- Dial indicators
- Feeler gauge
- 3 prong gear puller
- POSSIBLY a transmission gear puller if they are stuck on the splines.

You will also need to make a tool to hold the shafts for shimming, the manual gives blueprints on the last page. You will need a lathe to make it, or try and borrow one from a tranny shop.

Steel 3-4 fork is $50
Each gear is aprox $150 (Probably wont need any)
Each slider is aprox $150 (Might need one)
Bearing kit is aprox $200 (Definetely will want to do this, use Timken)
Syncro kit is about $200 (For sure want to do this)

You will definetely want to replace the shift guide lever bolt while you have it out too, older ones can snap...

Keep stuff in order when you take it apart and you should be fine.

How many dial indicators are needed?
How about uprgrading the output shaft with a Viper, I wonder what this entails?

The viper shaft requires a new speedo gear, the shaft itself, and bigger bearings and requires machining to the input shaft as well as machining to the tailhousing. Parts are about $550 if i remember correctly and the entire thing assembled and machined by a shop is like $800

I didn't do any machining to my input shaft??. Only had to shorten the back end of the Viper output shaft by about 3/4 inch with an abrasive cut-off saw. New Viper tail housing bushing and seal like you said.
