So what can you tell me about turbo cams?

I understand NA cams. I REALLY know N2O cams. I am understanding/learning supercharger cams, but for the most part turbo cam specs elude me. I think alot of others are in the same boat.

1. What do I look for on the intake: lift and duration
2. What do I look for on the exhaust: lift and duration
3. Lobe seperation
4. Lobe shape/ramp speed?

What am I trying to do and when/why with the various timing events.

Last of all lets put a cam together for a couple of variables.

LT1 engine

1. 355 stock heads 15psi 9:1 compression

2. 383 ported GM heads 15-20 psi 9:1

3. 383 AFR heads 15-20psi 9:1

LS1 engine

4. 347 stock heads 9:1 compression

5. 382 ported heads 9:1

I thought someone would have responded by now, but for what it is worth I talked with sam at Combination Motorsports and he helped me pick out a perfect cam for my combo. It idles smooth and produces great torque. I think it is a CC 234 turbo grind.

See sig at bottem for results

Sorry I did not respond earlier, but I just came in from the shop. The actual numbers look more like 792 rwhp and I suspect that there was some race fuel left in tank during dyno run. The reason, we just kept turning up the boost and no detonation. I thought I had pure 93 in the tank. After a refill, detonation started. we turnned down boost until gone. Now 702 rwhp with 57deg. F. intake air charge. Go figure. However, the car still gets over 23MPG during normal street driving. I just got so excited after the first day of runs that I had to change my signature. Now I just dont have the will to admit that there may have been c-12 in the tank. O-well, just pray for me.

In any way, I came out of the aerospace industry and put all I learned into desiging atmospheric equlizers (turbo systems in the automotive world). I build and design the systems myself and am now installing them on cars and trucks. The last system I designed was for a ram-air of mine and I built a top mount system much like the turbo Buick guys. I worked long and hard on the hedders and getting the flow numbers just right. This required the removal and re-installation of factory accessories in different locations. However, I did not install the AC. I was able to use a 3 3/4" down-pipe and exhaust system.

I have pictures of the system I will e-mail anybody if they want to see an alternative to the lower mount systems. The high mount design takes advantage of the flow characteristics of superheated air. I can provide some of my research papers if I can still find them.

By the way the STS system is, for the most part, very neet for a basic bolt on. I am jealous I did not think of it myself. O-well, good luck to the STS guys. They should make alot of money with thoes kits.

Feel free to ask any questions, I get online at night and will answer all I can. If you are in the Tulsa OK area, call me and come by.

Mines almost single patterned, it has little less dur and lift on the intake side, nothing too wild, could have been a drunken grinder This is all from degreeing it, it didn't have a cam card...the joys of custom cams
