ok fellas,
the time is finally near.
i am starting to look for an ls1 SS.
now i really want a 2001 camaro SS but the 2000's are cheaper.
but as everyone knows, each year the automaker improves over the previous year.
i read that stuff like piston slap, excessive oil consumption, coolant leaks.. are not as common on 2001's as they are on 2000's. is this true?
i tried doing a search but i didnt get mush help.
Mister Will 09-14-2003, 02:23 PM I am not sure about improvements of piston slap, oil consumption, or collant leaks. But a big difference between 2000, and 2001 was the installation of the LS6 intake manifold on all LS1 engines. This provided more low end torque with an increase in HP. If I had a choice I would go for the 2001.
werd. but i will be modding it.. so i dont really care too much about which car has more power.
what i do wanna know is things like, what better improvements were made on the engine, rear end, tranny, brakes, suspension.
i think the o1's use a zo6 clutch right?
and the o1's have no egr?

I am 75% sure that the 2001 had the Z06 clutch, but I would wait for another confirmation.
The LS6 manifold has no EGR. Hence the EGR was removed for all LS1s from 2001 and beyond.

It has the same rear end, same tranny, same brakes and suspension. The 01 has a better oil cooling system and the ls6 intake for a supposed 10hp gain. I figure, why spend the money for the ls6 intake for a 2000.. just get the 01. Other unimportant things the 01 has is more sound dampening to make a quieter cabin (which makes hardly any difference when you slap a new muffler on) You're pretty much comparing the same car, other than the intake, the oil cooling and the clutch.
chpmnsws6 09-14-2003, 03:33 PM get an 00 and put an ls6 intake on it....... that just gave you enough extra cash for you to get a cam and headers ;)
what about the piston slap and the excessive oil consumption?

My 01 WS6 doesn't have piston slap, and uses absolutely no oil. Its unreal.
i guess i should stick with an 01
chuck 09-14-2003, 11:52 PM I could not be more pleased with my '01, and would suggest them to everyone.
DS01Z28 09-15-2003, 09:34 AM '01. And you won't need a different intake, cam, and headers! No oil waste either.

Black01_Z 09-15-2003, 11:14 AM My 01 does burn a little oil. I dont see why you shouldnt do a cam or headers on one though. The manifolds are the same on an 01 as an 00. I believe the 01+ got a slightly different cam, but they could still more than benefit from a cam swap. The big plus is no EGR and AIR restriction plus an LS6 intake.

Well said. ;)
My 00 does not consume any oile between oil changes (3-5K miles), no piston slap, no coolant problems and made 297hp/309lb.ft to the rear wheels when stock. ;)
I have nothing to complain, I guess... :D
If money is not an issue to you, then why not get the newest possible?

silversupersport 09-15-2003, 04:49 PM my 00 SS has no coolant problems and doesn't have any piston slap but does use about a liter of oil every 5000 kms, but then i dont drive like a grandma either. :)
i found a 2000 SS
with 35000kms.
thats about 21 000 miles.
its fully loaded.
NBM , M6
and its going for 23000 cdn.
thats about 16000 us.
originally im looking for a RED car..
but the NBM isnt too bad. what do you guys think about NBM?

SStrokerAce 09-16-2003, 06:17 AM I have a 2000 SS, I looked at a 98, another 2000 and a 2001 when I bought one. I basically picked up the one that was in the best condition. The 2001 has the LS6 intake and better clutch. Those two things are worth about $700+ and the install. The other thing is that there were no 1LE 2000's so if you are looking for that you will not find it.
2 years ago now I picked up my car with 6000miles on it, about 20 coats of Zanio and a car that was never in the rain for $20K. Basically a brand new car. Just take a while and look untill you find the one.

silversupersport 09-16-2003, 05:42 PM if i ever get enough cash together for a paint job im gettin NBM or SOM. i would definatly take a good look at that one in the add. sounds like a good price for a car with only 35000kms. :)
mr_muff 09-16-2003, 07:33 PM man you should look for a SOM ws6
those looks so ****ing sweet.
