Pinion Bearings Going Out...Need some Advice

I have had a look at the gears and they are fine.

Now, I have no experience in taking apart a rear end. However, I do have all the tools needed. A friend can press on the new bearings onto the pinion shaft and I have a magnetic dial indicator to measure lash.

So, my question is: if I am only going to be replacing bearings, is this a job I can do? I hear from many others that this is not for everyone, but all I am doing is bearings. Will this make it easier for me to do or is it still suggested to have a pro do it?

It would seem to me that the hard part of shimming the pinion has already been done and this will not change (I assume).

Ben,
You could probably do it. Since you aren't changing the gear set then you should be able to use the same shims and such. Pull it apart, press the new bearings on, put it back together.
If you get stuck somewhere...ask here.

I've never done it myself, but I've been there 3 or 4 times and helped each time. I could probably replace pinion bearings, but setting up a new gear would be a little challenging since I don't have the right tools.
Funny thing is that in the next couple of weeks I'll be doing this same thing!
